The courteous permission given for the republication of this volume of syllabi and editorial matter from the West Publishing Company's Reporter System and other reports does not authorize the use of such material without the direct consent of the copyright proprietors.
Considerable interest has been expressed in the judicial decisions construing the copyright act of March 4, 1909. The earlier decisions (few in number) were printed as addenda to my annual reports for 1910-11, 1911–12, and 1912–13. The cases reported in 1913-14 (24 in number) were collected and printed as a separate Copyright Office bulletin (No. 17).
The present collection of decisions continues the series and includes decisions of the Federal courts involving copyright from July 28, 1914, to July 2, 1917. To these have been added a number of decisions of State courts and departmental decisions and opinions on the same subject and cognate subjects such as the law of literary property, the unfair use of titles, etc., handed down within the period from July 1, 1909 (the date upon which the copyright act went into effect) to June 30, 1916.
The compilation has been made by Mr. Richard C. DeWolf, who has also read the proof. It is believed that the contents of this volume with the decisions of courts and departmental officers published in my former annual reports and in Copyright Office Bulletin No. 17, together form a fairly comprehensive, if not entirely complete, collection of authoritative interpretations of the present copyright act which have been delivered during the period of July 1, 1909, to June 30, 1916, inclusive.
For the convenience of those interested in these decisions, the table of cases has been made complete to include not only all cases printed in this Bulletin No. 18 (such cases being indicated by asterisks) but all cases previously printed in the Annual Reports of the Register of Copyrights for 1910-11, 1911-12, and 1912–13.
Copies of both bulletins are sold by the Superintendent of Documents in cloth binding; No. 17, 30 cents, and No. 18, 60 cents. January 8, 1918.
