INTRODUCTION

Section I. GENERAL INFORMATION

MICLIC SYSTEM MOUNTED TO M353 TRAILER

1-1. SCOPE. This manual contains instructions for operator, unit, intermediate direct support, and intermediate general support maintenance of the Demolition Kit, Mine Clearing Line Charge (MICLIC). The primary purpose of MICLIC is to clear a safe, continuous path for vehicles through minefields. It can be deployed against both hasty and deliberate minefields.

1-2. MAINTENANCE FORMS, RECORDS, AND REPORTS. Department of the Army forms and procedures used for equipment maintenance will be those prescribed by DA Pam 738-750, The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS). Accidents involving injury to personnel or damage to materiel will be reported on DA Form 285, US Army Accident Investigation Report, in accordance with AR 385-40, Accident Reporting and Records. Explosives and ammunition malfunctions will be reported in accordance with AR 75-1, Malfunctions Involving Ammunition and Explosives.

DESTRUCTION OF ARMY MATERIEL TO PREVENT ENEMY USE. To prevent enemy use of MICLIC, follow instructions given in TM 43-0002-24. This includes directions for destruction of the trailer, linear demolition charge, launcher, rocket, and technical documentation.

1-4. PREPARATION FOR STORAGE OR SHIPMENT. Administrative storage of the launcher and trailer will be done by intermediate (direct support) maintenance personnel. This will be done according to TM 740-90-1, Administrative Storage of Equipment. The MK 22 MOD 4 rocket motor and M58A3 linear demolition charge (HE) will be stored at an Ammunition Supply Point (ASP) when not being retained as basic load. The inert M68A2 charge may be kept at the unit level or stored at the ASP, as convenient. Only authorized ammunition personnel will be allowed to store and ship the linear demolition charge and rocket. Intermediate (general support) maintenance will prepare the launcher and trailer for shipment using TB 740-97-2, Preservation of USAMECOM Mechanical Equipment for Shipment and Storage.

1-5. REPORTING EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS (EIR). If your MICLIC unit needs improvement, let us know. Send us an EIR. You, the user, are the only one who can tell us what you don't like about your equipment. Let us know why you don't like the design. Put it on an SF 368 (Quality Deficiency Report). Mail it to: Commander US Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command, ATTN: AMSMC-DSM-B(D), Dover, NJ, 07801-5001. We will send you a reply.

Section II. EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

1-6. EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES, AND FEATURES.

a. System Description. The MICLIC is a trailer-mounted, rocket-towed linear demolition charge. The MICLIC is used to provide a clear path for combat vehicles during minefieldbreaching operations. The major components of the MICLIC are as follows:

(1) High Explosive Linear Demolition Charge. The linear demolition charge M58A3 contains 1750 pounds (5 pounds per foot) of composition C4. The linear charge is 350 feet long and consists of a 3/4-inch nylon rope core and two or three strands of detonating cord passing through the C4 blocks. It is attached to a 205 foot arresting cable. The design of the linear charge is similar to that of link sausages, that is, a continuous chain.

(2) Rocket Motor. The MK 22 Mod 4, 5-inch rocket motor is designed to tow the linear charge over the target minefield.

(3) Mine Clearing Launcher. The MK 155 Mod O is a welded framework that holds the packaged linear charge and has a hydraulically-elevated launcher rail for the towing rocket. The launcher holds the linear charge and the rocket motor securely during transport to the target minefield.

(4) Trailer Chassis. The trailer chassis is a general purpose, 3-1/2-ton, M353 standard trailer which holds the mine clearing launcher and transports launcher to target minefield.

Inert Linear Demolition Charge. Linear demolition charge (M68A2) is a non-explosive linear charge used only for training sessions. It can be launched up to three times. It cannot be reused after the third time.

b. Capabilities and Features.

(1) The MICLIC is capable of clearing a path 14 meters wide (7 meters each to the left and right of linear charge), and 100 meters long through a minefield. Minefields planted with single-impulse, pressure-type, antitank mines, and/or mechanically actuated antipersonnel mines can be cleared with use of the MICLIC. Mines that are not detonated by explosion of the linear charge will usually be uncovered or blown from the ground.

(2) System is designed for towing over rough terrain.

(3) System is deployable in various types of climate and weather conditions.

(4) Rocket motor and linear charges (M58A3 and M68A2) can be remotely detonated either from inside the towing vehicle (if armored) or from a covered position 75 feet (23 meters) away from the trailer.

(5) Launcher and trailer are fully reusable and can be reloaded with a new rocket motor and linear charge in 30 minutes.

LINEAR DEMOLITION CHARGE (M58A3/M68A2) (1). Both linear demolition charges, HE and inert, are stored in a linear demolition charge container with the arresting cable coiled beneath the charge.

MK 155 LAUNCHER (2). The MK 155 launcher is a welded framework used to hold the demolition charge container in place. It has a hydraulically-elevated launcher rail and primarily consists of launcher rail, support and frame weldment assembly, safety switch electrical assembly and hydraulic assembly. Support equipment stored in the storage container include a protective nylon cover, turnbuckles, U-bolts, selector switch assembly, lanyard, blasting machine (M34), blasting circuit test set (M51), lifting sling, and instruction cards.

MK 22 MOD 4 ROCKET MOTOR (3). The rocket motor is a 5-inch motor used to extend the linear demolition charge across the target minefield. It is a modification of the previous Mod 3 standard 5-inch design, with nozzles at the front, instead of the rear, for better towing characteristics.

LINEAR DEMOLITION CHARGE (M58A3/M68A2) (1). The linear demolition charge is self-packaged in a rectangular steel container with a steel-sheathed, plywood lid. The subcomponents of the demolition charge container consist of the following:

LINEAR CHARGE. The linear charge consists of blocks of composition C4 which are encased by nylon sleeve around a central core of two or three strands of detonating cord and three strands of nylon rope. The inert charge (M68A2) has rubber blocks on a rope core.

FUZE CONNECTOR. The two-piece linear charge fuze connector is attached between the linear demolition charge at its tail end and the arresting cable. The forward end of the fuze connector, which is attached to linear demolition charge, places the ends of the detonating cord core next to the fuze's detonators. The arresting cable half of the fuze connector allows electrical and mechanical connections to the fuze. The linear demolition charge and fuze are secured when both connector halves are securely fastened with a ball-lock pin.

ARRESTING CABLE. The arresting cable is a 205-foot long nylon rope with an electrical cable running through the rope. The cable restrains the flight of the linear charge and ensures a standoff between towing vehicle and tail of linear charge. Electrical cable in the arresting cable provides the way to electrically initiate the linear charge. The arresting cable is secured to the linear demolition charge container by a steel hook.
