Of the employees 29 years of age or over for whom information was secured, 69.4 per cent of the males and only 22.2 per cent of the females are married, and 3.4 per cent of the males and 5.3 per cent of the females are widowed. The proportion of married males is greater than the proportion of married females in the case of all foreign-born, all the native-born of foreign father, all the native-born of native father, and all foreign races except the North Italian. The North Italians and French, in the order mentioned, have the largest proportions of married females and the Irish the smallest proportion of married males. In general, the proportion of widowed females is larger than the proportion of widowed males.

The table next submitted divides the totals of the one preceding and shows the percentage of employees in each conjugal condition according to age groups, sex, and general nativity and race:

The preceding table shows that of 6,689 employees who are 20 years of age or over, 44.4 per cent are married and 4.4 per cent are widowed. Of the employees who are from 20 to 29 years of age, 21.7 per cent are married and 1.2 per cent are widowed; of those from 30 to 44 years of age 72.3 per cent are married and 6.6 per cent are widowed, while of the employees who are 45 years of age or over 78.7 per cent are married and 13.3 per cent are widowed. the employees who are native-born of foreign father, those whose fathers were born in England show the highest percentage married and the highest percentage widowed and the employees whose fathers 48296°- --VOL 11-11-6

were born in Ireland the lowest percentage married and the lowest percentage widowed, excepting in the group including employees 45 years of age or over, where those whose fathers were born in Germany show the highest percentage married and widowed and the employees whose fathers were born in Ireland the smallest percentage married and widowed. Of the foreign-born employees, the Russian Hebrews show the highest percentage married in the groups of persons from 20 to 29 years of age and from 30 to 44 years of age, while the English employees show the smallest percentage married in each group. In the group first mentioned the Germans show the highest percentage widowed and in that last mentioned the English show the highest percentage widowed. Of the employees who are 45 years of age or over, the North Italians show the highest per cent married and the English employees show the highest percentage widowed. A further study of the table shows that a considerably higher per cent of the male than of the female employees in each group are married and that the percentage of the female employees in each group who are widowed is considerably higher than that of the males who are widowed.

The following table shows, by sex and general nativity and race of individual, the percentage of persons in the households studied 20 years of age or over, in each conjugal condition:

Of the 645 persons reporting conjugal condition in the foregoing table, 14.7 per cent are single, 80.5 per cent are married, and 4.8 per cent are widowed. A total of 358 males reported complete data. Seventy-six per cent of that number are married and 1.7 per cent are widowed. The native-born of foreign father appear in numbers too small for computation. Of the foreign-born, the Hebrews show the largest proportion of married persons and are followed closely by the North Italians. The Armenians show the smallest proportion married, 53.3 per cent. Of the 287 females reporting, 86.1 per cent are married and 8.7 per cent are widowed. One hundred per cent of the native-born of foreign father and 86 per cent of the foreign-born are married. The Hebrews show the largest proportion-94.4 per centof married persons, and the Armenians report the smallest-67.9 per cent. Less than 10 per cent of the Syrian, Polish, and Hebrew females are widowed; only one race, the Armenian, reports more than 10 per cent of the females as single. The totals follow more closely the detailed information for the males than for the females.

The significant fact in connection with the conjugal condition of the foreign-born male employees is the proportion shown to have left their wives in their native land when immigrating to this country. This tendency is indicated in the following table, which shows, by race of husband, the percentage of foreign-born husbands who report wife in the United States and the percentage who report wife abroad.

The proportion of husbands reporting wives in the United States is 95.5 per cent. All of the Scotch husbands and over 98 per cent of the Dutch, English, French, and German husbands report wives in the United States.

The tendency of married males of foreign birth who left their wives abroad when they immigrated to this country, to send for them after designated periods of residence in the United States, is set forth in the following table, which shows, by race of husband and by years husband has been in the United States, the percentage of foreign-born husbands who report wife abroad:

It appears from the data presented in the preceding table that in the case of each of the four races for which the percentages are given the proportion of husbands reporting wives abroad decreases with length of residence of husbands in the United States. It will be noted that none of the English husbands who have been in the United States from five to nine years or ten years or over, and only 0.3 per cent of the German husbands who have been here ten years or over, report wives abroad.
