THE J. B. LIPPINCOTT Co. have just issued Picked Up in the Streets," translated from the German by Mrs. Wister, a novel which, by an unusual anomaly, is on the day of its publication more sure of readers through the name of its ever popular translator than for that of its lessknown German author, H. Schobert.

FUNK & WAGNALLS have just ready an edition of Rev. E. Paxton Hood's "The Throne of Eloquence," which was first issued in England in 1885 and had just been revised by the author before his death; and they also bring out a new volume on which he was engaged and which his wife has made ready for publication, entitled "The Vocation of the Preacher."

TICKNOR & Co. have just ready "Agatha Page," by Isaac Henderson, which, knowing the author's intellectual force, we feel justified in predicting will be one of the mark-making novels of the year; and "Isidra," by Willis Steell, a story of Mexico, dedicated to the Mexican Mining Syndicate with which he was connected while gathering material for his romance.

8+297 p. D. cl., $1.25.

Based on a series of nine lectures, delivered in 1886 before the faculty and students of Washington and Lee University and the public of Lexington. The author is professor of history in the State University of Indiana. He has thoroughly studied the exhaustive works of the great French and English writers on the subject and epitomized the special points made by them. In strong, terse English he paints the picture of the lawless luxury of the court of Louis XIV., the tyranny and immorality of the clergy, the oppression, hopelessness, and wrongs of the brutalized peasantry. The chapters devoted to the persecution of literary men and the gradual reawakening of arts, science, and literature after the death of the tyrant, the inspiring and moulding influence of English thought and letters in bringing about educa tion and individual opinion in France, show personal theories and impressions of the author as well as a catholic and respectful appreciation of the thoughts and verdicts of the writers from whom he draws his materi

Agatha Page is a violin virtuosa, who resides with her mother's brother, the Duke of Ricci, on the shores of Lake Como. She is introduced at the age of sixteen, after the death of her American father. Her cousin Mercede, the Duke's daughter, has married against her father's wishes and he has cast her off. Agatha hears that her cousin has been deserted by her husband, and after much trouble she prevails upon her uncle to take her home with her boy. But Mercede is proud and prefers to earn her own living as a sculptor. Agatha marries an attaché of the Roman court and goes to live there, devoting herself to all kinds of charities and plans tending to help women especially. Her husband does not share her philanthropic tastes and drifts into the toils of Mercede for a time. Agatha's love, faith, and wise patience finally make all things work together for good. Henry, S. A review of two essays published in 1884 and '85 by the American Tract Soc, and the American S. S. Union. The one is called "The abiding Sabbath," by Rev. G: Elliott, the other "The Lord's day," by A. E. Waffle, They received respectively prizes of $500 and $rooo. They seek to uphold the sacredness of the nrst day of the week as the Sabbath. Mr. Jones believes the seventh day of the week is the Sabbath, and makes many quotations from the books reviewed, which he considers sustain his argument.

Kennedy, J. H. Early days of Mormonism; Palmyra, Kirtland, and Nauvoo. N. Y., C: Scribner's Sons, 1888. C. 6+275 p. por. D. cl., $1.50.

The author is editor of the Magazine of Western History. His material has been gathered through years of unusual opportunity. He has told the history of Mormonism, leaving the issues that make Mormonism one of the problems of the age to those who have studied it from the mora!, religious, or political standpoint. Salt Lake is now so identified with the Mormons, that their early struggles and persistent growth in the settlements at Palmyra, N. Y., Kirtland, Ö., and Nauvoo, Ill., are almost unknown history to the present generation. Gives vivid character sketches of Joseph Smith, whom he calls the bodily force, Sidney Rigdon, the intellect, and Mar tin Harris, the financial foundation of Mormonism in its cradle-days, before Brigham Young, in 1852, introduced polygamy as one of the articles of its creed, the one upon which, most erroneously, the system is now generally supposed to be founded. No attempt is made at argument. It is careful, dispassionate, historical writing. *Key, T: Hewitt. A Latin-English dictionary; printed from the unfinished ms. of the late T: Hewitt Key. N. Ladd, G: T., D.D. What is the Bible? an inquiry into the origin and nature of the Old and New Testaments in the light of modern Biblical study. N. Y., C: Scribner's Sons, 1888. c. 11+497 p. D. cl., $2.

In the fall of 1883 the author embodied the results of several years of study in a work on "The doctrine of sacred scripture," which received an extended notice in the P. W. of Oct. 13 (no. 612). The conclusions of this large treatise are here put into a form better adapted to the wants of the multitude of lay readers of the English Bible. The book contains a statement of the answer which critical investigation gives to the question, What is the Bible?-made with that brevity, clearness, and freedom from discussion of the more doubtful matters which the average reader requires. The conclusions of the earlier book are substantially unchanged. The author asserts that modern critical study of the Bible has discovered nothing which need disturb the employment of it "as the believer's rule of faith and life."

They are as follows: The spiritual Franciscans; Guglielma and Dolcius; The Fraticelli; Political heresy utilized by the church; Political heresy utilized by the state: Sorcery and occuit arts: Witchcraft; Intellect and faith. Appendix of documents. Index to the 3 volumes.

Lear, H. L. Sidney. Henri Dominique Lacordaire: a biographical sketch. New ed. N. Y., E. & J. B. Young & Co., 1888. 3+336 p. 1 il. S. cl., $1.25.

The life of Père Lacordaire, based upon his own writings and upon two memoirs, one written by his life-long friend, Montalembert, the other by his disciple and brother Dominican, Père Chocarne, has been happily sketched by a hand practised in the writing of Christian biographies. Personal magnetism, personal beauty, and great eloquence were the natural gifts which the great good priest of Nôtre Dame brought to the high office which he chose from conviction, after having been educated for a lawyer. Politics and religion were closely allied in the troubled seventeen years that preceded the Coup d'état of 1851, and Père Lacordaire made his mark in both. He was elected member of the French Academy in 1859. He died in 1861. The writer is a Protestant, which makes her judgment of a Roman priest interesting and valuable to readers of both faiths. *Liddon, H. P., D.D. Sermons. Whittaker, 1888. 192 p. O. One of the remarkable omissions in the literature of law in this country is the absence of any work upon buildings, building contracts, and leases. To fill this long-felt want is the object of this treatise. The author has diligently compiled and compared both the English and American authorities, preparing his text directly from judicial determinations, strenuously avoiding all "speculations" as to the law. He has also endeavored to state all propositions as briefly and concisely as is consistent with clearness.

Malot, Hector. Zyte; tr. by J. E. Simpson. N. Y., F: Warne & Co., 1888. 256 p. D. (Library of continental authors, no. 6.) pap., 35 c.

Opens with a humorous sketch of two travelling vans containing the goods, chattels, and stage properties of a band of strolling players who are making a round of the environs of Paris. Zyte is the daughter of the ambitious leader, who boldly undertakes to represent all the pieces of the day, which he adapts to his company in a most amusing way. At one of these performances Zyte is seen by the author of one of the pieces in which she is playing her father's version. He persuades Zyte to go to the Odéon, and her life as actress, her love for a rich miller's son, the father's opposition, intrigue, and persecution of his sweet, true daughter-in-law make the story. "Love your art, love it alone," is the advice poor Zyte adopts after many troubled years.

Margaret Regis is one of a group of merry students at an institute for young ladies. The reader is introduced to her on the eve of her graduation, when she and her companions are getting all the enjoyment they can out of the few days remaining to them. From school Margaret goes abroad to prepare herself for her life-work-that of a teacher-and then back again to Boston, and out into the country, where she begins her labors. How her plans fall through, after a brief experience, and how she makes an engagement to teach one grown-up pupil for life, instead of a room full of little ones for half-a-dozen terms, readers must find out for themselves from the book itself.

"History of the origin of Christianity," which ought *Schaff, Philip, D.D., ed. A select library of

consistently to have begun with the present volume. His reason for not observing this chronological order was that human life is uncertain, and as he was particularly desirous of writing about the first century and a half of Christianity, he plunged into the middle of his subject in his "Life of Jesus.' He says: "As soon as I found that I should probably be given time to deal with the history of Israel, I seemed to gain fresh strength." For the last six years he has given his whole attention to this great work, and the history is here brought down to the epoch of Esdras, the period of the definite constitution of Judaism. If he lives, the second volume will appear within a year, and the third in two years' time. If he dies, the material is in shape for publication, but would lack the author's last careful touches. The translator's name does not appear. His work is exceptionally well done. *Ristori, Adelaide. Adelaide Ristori: studies and memoirs. N. Y., Scribner & Welford, 1888. O. por. cl., $2.

Three strong stories of the sixteeenth and seventeenth centuries. "A brother of dragons" appeared in the Atlantic Monthly for March, 1886. It is a tender little love tale, told by an ancient serving-man in the quaint language of the time. The author finds her odd title in a text from Job: "I am a brother to dragons and a companion to owls." "The Farrier Lass o' Piping Pebworth" appeared in Lippincott's in July, '87, and "Nurse Crumpet tells the story in Harper's for Sept., '87. *Roberts, Rev. Alex., and Donaldson, Ja., eds. Though not one of the most conspicuous statesmen of this time, he was one of the most capable and useful. His principal achievements are summed up in the closing sentences of Mr. Roosevelt's biography: "He took a most prominent part in bringing about the independence of the colonies, and afterwards in welding them into a single powerful nation, whose greatness he both foresaw and foretold. He made the final draft of the United States Constitution; he first outlined our present system of national coinage; he originated and got under way the plan for the Erie Canal; as Minister to France, he successfully performed the most difficult task ever allotted to an American representative at a foreign capital."

The heroine was picked up in the streets" of Paris at the age of eight by a blasé Russian prince, who bought her of her parents, sent her to a convent, and for eight years forgot her existence. When he is informed she must leave the convent he has her brought to his house, but ignores her entirely. Gradually pretty Ferra is enlightened by word and deed that her position in the house of an unmarried man is anomalous. At this. moment his father arrives from Russia, falls in love with her and marries her. After three years Ferra reappears at the capital of a German principality--a rich young widow, original, innocent, gay, and very beautiful. Unconsciously she transgresses some of the cast-iron rules of etiquette, and jealousy and envy again take up her name and make her life a burden, until she is taught. the use and necessity of society's laws. *Sharp, W.
