beautiful the thought may be, or how veracious, it is apparent to me that the one is the natural outcome of the otherinseparable associates, as it were.

The Omnipotent One was the creator of all things, animate or inanimate. The fiishes of the sea, the fowls of the air, the beasts of the field, the vegetation of the earth, both natural and cultivated, created He for some sage design, and, his last work of art, man, whom He created in his own image, was to be the active agent for the procurement and direction of these benefits and the utility to which they were to be subjected, in order that life and health might be nourished and sustained.

There is not a blade that flourishes but what has its field of usefulness, whether wide or narrow; and, entering the realms of medicine, we find that many roots, herbs, plants and trees furnish us requisite constituents for the alleviation of pain and the eradication of illness, which has been the outcome of man's fertile brain thirsting after scientific knowledge. For example, mentha is a genus of odorous perennial herbs of the labiatæ or mint family, and mentha piperita is the wellknown peppermint of pharmacy and confectionery; pinus, a large widely dispersed genus of trees of the coniferæ or pine family, and pinus palustris, the longleaved southern yellow or Georgia pine; eucalyptus, a very large and important genus of evergreen trees of the myrtaceæ or myrtle family, and eucalyptus globulus, the blue gum tree; cinnamomum camphora, a considerable genus of evergreen trees of the lauraceæ or laurel family, commonly know as the camphor tree, and others, galore. I menton these four natural vegetated growths in particular, for I find that a potent and thoroughly scientific preparation has been formed from their constituents, together with a base, that bids fair to shine with mai ked luster among the galaxy of surgical dressings.

For dermatic diseases of any nature, whether it be eczema, acne rosacea, varicose ulcers, ringworm, pruritus, erysipalas, erythema, burns, scalds, ulcers, herpes, felons, etc., etc., it is a most efficient ointment, soothing and cool

ing, in the treatment of all inflammatory cutaneous affections.

Why is it so puissant and of such titanic value? Because it exerts an anesthetic effect, causes a cooling sensation and a feeling of supreme comfort, consequently pain and itching cease at once. Being an non irritating antiseptic, its properties in this direction extend much lower than the

skin and penetrate the hypodermic texture, thereby reaching the inflammations that are deep-seated, jugulating their advancement. It restores life to the capillaries that have become diverted and wanting in vital force and energy, by checking the serum discharge which constitutes secretion, It is a powerful deodorant, while its ability to restore and produce cicatrization is one of its principal charms and allurements.

This scientific unguent, made from mentha piperita, pinus palustris, eucalyptus globulus and cinnamomum camphora, in combination with a base, is Mentholyptine, manufactured by the Pharmaceutical Specialty Company of Philadelphia, Pa. It is one of the few potent antiseptic surgical dressings, efficacious anodynes, sedatives and stimulents ever prepared, and should be tested by every physician, surgeon, specialist, general practitioner who desires to be progressive and up to date. It does not excite a desquamating influence and can be freely applied to mucous surfaces.

Case 1.-Burns. A young girl was quite severely burned about the arm with gasoline. I was called and covered the surface with Mentholyptine. The pain was immediately reduced and the surface healed without the least hesitation. I am convinced that this new discovery is the ideal dressing for burns.

Case 2.-Ulcer on lips. A young lady had suffered a great deal, and possibly more than could be appreciated by those who have not had the experience. She had been treated for nearly a year, with the ulcer still increasing in size. When she consulted me it was the size of a nickel. I kept Mentholyptine constantly applied to it, and in two weeks it was entirely healed. I washed it off, also, every day with a weak bichloride solution.

Case 3.-Rectal trouble. A young lady

had been troubled with her rectum for some time, when her physician stated that an operation was necessary, which he resorted to, and, after two or three months, she called on me. I made an examination and found some severe ulcers still. I applied Mentholyptine night and morning, and especially directed her to apply after each defecation. In one week she was greatly relieved, and in two weeks was entirely cured.

Case 4.-Ingrowing toe nail. The surface about the nail was greatly swollen and highly inflamed; so much so that the lady could not put on her shoe. She said that she had tried salves, iodine, etc., but it would not get better. I prescribed Mentholyptine and the next morning the pain was gone and there was great improvement. I told her to keep the Mentholyptine covered over the inflammation, and cotton over that for four or five days. At the end of the fifth day she reported entirely well.

Case 5-Varicella. I was called to see a case of chicken pox in a child four years old. The case was one of a severe nature and seemed to distress the child greatly. I applied Mentholyptine to the eruption and it seemed to yield to its soothing influence, giving the child much comfort. I consider it a most reliable application in this class of dermic disorders.

Case 6.-Bunion with a hard corn in center. I told the gentleman to spread about a tablespoonful of Mentholyptine on a piece of cotton and place on the bunion each night for a week, and he reported that it had gotten nearly well. On the second day he picked out a little hard corn from the center that seemed to do all the mischief. I told him to keep up the use of Mentholy ptine a week longer. After the kernel was out the improvement was most rapid, and he has had no trouble since.

Case 7.-Syphilitic ulcer. A gentle man, 38 years of age, bookkeeper, had suffered with syphilis for a number of years. He called on me, complaining of a stiffness in the knee joint and ankle, also above the metatarsal bones. him Mentholyptine to spread on cotton and bind on his knee and ankle, and he reported much improvement. I also gave

I gave

him potassium iodide. He is doing nicely, but I have not finished the treatment as yet. Case 8. John W., age 30 years, came to me complaining of itching piles, which, he said, would almost drive him crazy. He had employed a number of ointments, but could not get permanent relief. I gave him some Mentholyptine and told him to apply it to the parts internally and externally. He reported that he got relief at once, and in about a week he had no more trouble.

The

Case 9.- Eczema of the scrotum. penis, testicles, environing parts were covered with crusts and scales, while the rectum was so sore that it was impossible for him to defecate without great pain, having fainted several times at stool. I told him to wash the surface with bicarbonate of soda in water and then apply Mentholyptine night and morning. He reported the second day that his relief was a great surprise to him, as he thought he could not get cured of that dreadful skin disease. I kept him applying Mentholyptine for two weeks, when he was nearly well. I advised him to keep it up until entirely well, and have not seen him since.

Case 10.-Scarlatina. I was called to see a child on the second day after the eruption had appeared. I ordered Mentholyptine to be applied to the surface of the child, and was happily surprised with the results. It modified the condition of the disease and gave the child great relief. I consider it is of paramount value in this disease.

Case 11.-Intertrigo and the results. A little baby, with its privates almost as raw as raw beef, was brought to me by its mother for treatment. She said that she had employed a number of powders, but it grew steadily worse, until now it had developed into a very bad sore. I ordered Mentholyptine spread on a large piece of absorbent cotton and placed over the whole surface. The mother returned and said that the child rested and seemed better. I examined it and found that it was beginning to form a new skin over the surface. I told her to contine the use of Mentholyptine, and in about a week the child was almost well. I have not seen the baby since.

Case 12.-Chronic ulcer. A gentleman consulted me presenting an old, chronic ulcer on his tibia, and which had given him a great deal of annoyance. I catechised him carefully and found that it was due to an injury. I washed it first with a weak solution of bichloride of mercury and spread Mentholyptine on a large piece of absorbent cotton and placed over the ulcer. I dressed it each day, washing it off with a 7% saline solution before applying the Mentholyptine. The ulcer began to granulate, and in a little over two weeks was covered with a firm, pinkish skin. At the present time it is entirely well.

some

Case 13.-Syphilis. A man about 35 years of age called and showed me a large surface of pinkish red on his leg, which was very sore and would indentate easily and appeared as though there was pus in it. I questioned him closely, but he absolutely denied any taint of syphilis, which I thought it very closely resembled. I treated it for some time with Mentholyptine with considerable local betterment, but still it refused to permanently improve. I decided to cut it open, which I did,, and then it would not heal. I then decided that he had lied to me, so I put him on proiodid of mercury, the syphilitic treatment, applied Mentholyptine to the sore, and I must confess the effect of the Mentholyptine on the sore was wonderful; in fact, the ulcer healed much more rapidly than any I had previously treated. This is the only sore of this nature that I have ever treated with this potent dressing, and I certainly will give it a more extensive trial in the next cases, as the results were so remarkable in this one.

Case 14. Lacerated perineum. A young married lady was severely lacerated during childbirth, by the physician allowing the woman to jump up when the instruments were being placed in position, causing them to slip and cut her. This wound was not severe enough to sew, but in time it grew worse and would not be healed with the usual remedies. It had gotten to be very sore and inflamed. She called me and I suggested an operation, to which she would not consent. plied Mentholyptine, with the thought that it would greatly relieve her and in

I ap

time she would consent to the operation. When I called later it was very much improved, and I told her to continue to place two tablespoonfuls on absorbent cotton and bandage it on closely. To the surprise of all it entirely healed, with but very little cicatricial tissue, and unusual feature in these cases.

Case 15.-Universal eczema. Mr. G., age 39 years, consulted me. He had been employing all known remedies for this affection without results; the numerous antipyretic medicaments used did not allay the tormenting itching. I found Mentholyptine accomplished this almost instantly, and the soothing effect on the highly inflamed epidermis was of potent benefit and comfort to him, for his mind was very much disturbed by the agonizing itching, together with the loss of sleep, that he thought he would go crazy. rapidly healed after this sedative ointment was applied, and the results were all that could be anticipated in the treatment of so baffling a dermatic disease. I was called to see Mrs. L., 19 years of age, in first confinement. She is a splendidly developed woman in every respect, and weighing about 150 pounds when in normal condition. Previous health excellent; a country woman, doing her own housework up to confinement. On my arrival I found her up and around the room and complaining of sharp, shooting and lancinating pains; head presentation, first position. After ascertaining these facts I was satisfied and and retired, the husband and I lying down on the porch. The patient got out of bed to urinate, when she was seized with a convulsion. I injected 10 minims tincture veratrum viride, 1-2 grain morphine sulphate. The first was followed by four others. I sent for assistance but had convulsion under control when same arrived. We delivered her without further trouble. Patient made a good recovery.

After having followed out this mode of treatment I put the patient on Protonuclein powders, three grains t. i. d. for two weeks, and then on the tablets, three to five grains t. i. d. for about two weeks. I have treated quite a large number of this class of patients who have suffered for a number of years, some being very severe, and have never yet failed to entirely eradicate the disease; of course, meeting other accompanying conditions as indicated.

I trust that this may be of value to many physicians.
