PREFATORY NOTE.

THE pages which follow are an initial contribution to the study of Shelley's Nature poetry. In establishing the existing criticism on the subject, I have refrained from comment except with reference to the question of idealization. An extension of this criticism in any thorough sense would have carried me much beyond the ordinary limits of an investigation of this kind. It was, therefore, possible merely to indicate the direction which the study will take (page 20), and to state my intention of publishing the results at some future date. I need make no apology for the importance which I have attached to Shelley's similes as throwing light upon his poetic methods of treating Nature; and in this connection I take the welcome opportunity of thanking Professor Bright for many valuable suggestions and much kindly aid.
