Of 471 husbands, 59.7 per cent report that their wives are in the United States, while 40.3 per cent report their wives abroad. Most of the Germans have their wives with them, while on the other hand 76.7 per cent of Polish wives are still abroad. The South Italians report 60 per cent of wives abroad.

The following table shows, by race of husband, the per cent of foreign-born husbands engaged in the manufacture of tableware who reported wife in the United States and the per cent who reported wife abroad:

VISITS ABROAD.

The extent to which employees of foreign birth return to their native lands for visits of varying duration after they have been in this country for designated periods of residence is set forth in the next series of tabulations submitted. The first table presented in this connection shows, by years in the United States and race, the visits abroad made by foreign-born male employees of plate-glass factories:

[By years in the United States is meant years since first arrival in the United States. This table includes only races with 100 or more males reporting. The total, however, is for all foreign-born.]

Of the total group of foreign-born male employees, 17.8 per cent report one or more visits abroad. The Magyars, Slovaks, and Greeks report visits abroad to a greater extent than the Germans or Poles. Of the total group of foreign-born employees who have been in the United States less than five years, 11.5 per cent report one or more visits abroad. The proportion steadily increases with years in the United States. A similar increase is characteristic of the Polish and Slovaks. The Germans, it will be noted, who have been here from five to nine years report no visits abroad, but of the group who have been in the United States under five years 8.3 per cent report such visits.

The following table shows, by years in the United States and race, visits abroad made by foreign-born male employees of windowglass establishments:

That the strongest tendency toward visiting their native country is shown by those who have been in the United States from five to nine years is apparent from the above table. Subsequent to this period of residence in the United States, the proportion of the total foreign-born making visits abroad decreases slightly. While the proportion of South Italians who have been in the United States under five years is only slightly above, the proportion with a residence of from five to nine years having made one or more visits abroad is considerably above the proportion shown for all foreignborn male employees. The proportion who have been in the United States ten years or over is also above that shown in the total, but the difference is not so marked as with those in the preceding period. The table next presented shows, by years in the United States and race, visits abroad made by foreign-born male employees engaged in the manufacture of glass bottles.

Of the 471 male employees reported in this table, 15.8 per cent have taken one or more trips abroad. Of those who have been in the country under five years, 10.4 per cent report one or more trips abroad. Of those here from five to nine years, 25.9 per cent report likewise, while of those who have been here ten years or over 21.2 per cent have taken one or more trips abroad.

In the following table the visits abroad made by foreign-born employees employed in the manufacture of tableware is shown, by sex, years in the United States, and race:

Of the total number of persons reporting, 8 per cent have made visits abroad. Of those who have been in this country under five years, 3.4 per cent have made one or more visits abroad; of those with a residence of from five to nine years, 9.3 per cent have visited Europe; while 11.7 per cent of those who have been in the United States ten years or over have made one or more visits abroad. The table further shows that a greater proportion of males in each specified period of residence have made visits abroad than females who have been in the United States an equal length of time. Germans show a slightly higher percentage of persons who have visited abroad than the per cent for the total foreign-born.

Of 2,830 reporting complete data, 23.8 per cent are under 6 years age, 26 per cent from 6 to 19 years of age, 50.2 per cent 20 years of age and over. The highest proportion under 6 years of age is shown by the foreign-born, followed by the native-born of foreign father and native-born of native father, white. The native-born of foreign father show the highest proportion who are 6 and under 20, followed by the native-born of native father, white, and the foreign-born, while of those 20 years of age or over the native-born of native father, white, is the only class showing more than 50 per cent in this age group, followed by the foreign-born and native-born of foreign father in the order named, both of which show more than 45 per cent in this age group. Of the different foreign-born races the Polish show the highest percentage under 6 years of age, while all races except the Flemish show more than 20 per cent in this age group. It is seen that more than 50 per cent of all races except the Flemish and German are 20 years of age or over, while the greater proportion of these races are under 20 years of age. Of a total of 1,465 males reporting complete data, 22.9 per cent are under 6 years of age, 25.3 per cent are 6 and under 20, and 51.9 per cent are 20 years or over. Comparing the foreign-born with the native-born of foreign father, it is seen that there is but little difference in the proportions under 6, but both these classes show a considerable higher percentage in this group than the native-born white of native father. The native-born of foreign father show the largest proportion under 20 years of age, both the other classes showing more than 50 per cent 20 years of age or over. Of the foreign-born races the Flemish show the smallest proportion under 6 years of age and the Polish the highest. All races except the Germans show 50 per cent or over who are 20 years of age Of a total of 1,365 females, 24.7 per cent are under 6 years of age, 26.7 are from 6 to 19, and 48.6 per cent are 20 years of age or over. Comparing the foreign-born, the native-born of foreign father, and the whites native-born of native father, it is seen that the two classes first mentioned show practically the same proportions under 6, while the native-born of native father shows a considerably less per
