* The Honorable DAVID A. SMALLEY was appointed, on the 3d of February, 1857, District Judge for the District of Vermont, in the place of the Honorable SAMUEL PRENTISS, deceased.

The Honorable WILLIAM D. SHIPMAN was appointed, on the 21st of March, 1860, District Judge for the District of Connecticut, in the place of the Honorable CHARLES A. INGERSOLL, deceased.

THE following orders show under what authority the Honorable DAVID A. SMALLEY, District Judge for the District of Vermont, and the Honorable WILLIAM D. SHIPMAN, District Judge for the District of Connecticut, sat in the Circuit Court for the Southern District of New York.

"It having been certified to me by the Clerks of the Circuit and District Courts of the United States for the Southern District of New York, under the seals of the said Courts, that the public interests, from the accumulation of judicial business in said Courts, require the services of additional Judges from other Districts, and the facts having been established to my satisfaction, I do hereby designate and appoint the Honorable DAVID A. SMALLEY, District Judge of the United States for the District of Vermont, to hold said Circuit and District Courts for the Southern District of New York, from the sixth day of March, A. D. 1860, and to exercise all the powers conferred on him under and by virtue of the Act of Congress, passed July 29th, 1850, (9 U. S. Stat. at Large, 442,) and the Act amending the same, passed April 2d, 1852, (10 U. S. Stat. at Large, 5,) until this order shall be revoked.

"In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at the City of New York, this 25th day of February, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty.

"SAMUEL NELSON, [L. s] "Associate Justice Supreme Court U. S., and Circuit Judge of the 2d Circuit of the United States."
