SPERRY, GAO Consultant (11) FOREWORD 1 Hearings on the AEC authorization bill for fiscal year 1971 were held by the Joint Committee beginning on February 3, 1970, and extended through March 19, 1970. The review included not only the Commission's operating funds but also its request for funds for plant and capital equipment obligations. Three such hearings concerning the AEC's weapons program, special nuclear materials program, and the naval nuclear propulsion program were held in executive session because they involved the review of classified information. The vast bulk of the hearings, however, was held in open session and, together with appropriate supporting documentation, is reprinted herein and in the first, third, and fourth parts comprising this four-part record. Listed below are the major topical items of each of the four parts: Part 1: General; Space nuclear; and Radiation preservation of foods. Part 2: Physical research; Biology and medicine; and Plowshare. Part 3: Civilian power reactors. Part 4: Special nuclear materials; Light water breeder reactor; Raw materials; Training, education, and information; Isotopes development; Community; Regulatory; Program direction and administration; and Security investigations. 1 The executive hearing on naval nuclear propulsion reactors, after classified testimony and material are deleted for security reasons, will be printed separately.
