MONTEREY COUNTY.

Much attention has been paid to stock-raising, and the breeds improve the importation of choice stock. Whale-fishing has become a busines some importance on the coast. The amount of oil secured, for the hing season of three months, is about fifteen hundred barrels, the valu which is sixty cents per gallon. The stone-quarries at Carmel furnis ployment for sixty men. Attempts to procure water, by means of A sian wells, have recently been made, in the vicinity of San Juan, whic ve proved successful.

HUMBOLDT COUNTY.

There are nine saw-mills in this County, furnishing about twenty-fiv
llion feet of lumber
per annum.

FRESNO COUNTY.

The agricultural resources of this County have been greatly retarde the drought. There is a large amount of swamp land, susceptible clamation. During the past year, the San Joaquin River has been na ited by a steamer, of one hundred tons, up to the Tulare Slough.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY.

There are six breweries, manufacturing four hundred and ten thousan cht hundred gallons of beer per annum; three iron-foundries, two po ies, one gas-works.

SAN FRANCISCO COUNTY.

There are eighteen breweries, thirteen brick-yards, employing one hu ed and fifty men, seven machine-shops and foundries; iron cast per a m, two thousand tons; wrought-iron used, six hundred tons; tw oom-factories, and one sugar-refinery.
