Statistics of Public Libraries in Cities with Populations of 100,000 or more: Fiscal 1953 1/ This annual compilation of selected public library statistics is another in the series to supplement the comprehensive midcentury data which appeared in Bulletin 1953: No. 9. As in the previous circulars prepared in the Service to Libraries Section, all cities with population of 100,000 or more are represented. In response to requests, a new item has been added to the compilation: Number of books added during the year by purchase and by other means. For the first time also, data on the New York Public Library Reference Department have been given (table 1), although they are not included in the comparative summaries (tables 2 and 3). The comparison of the 1953 data with those for 1950 (table 2) reveals an increase of 8.32 percent in the number of volumes owned, 4.69 percent increase in the number of volumes borrowed for home use, and an increase of 28.50 percent in annual operating expenditures, excluding capital outlay. During the period, the amount spent for salaries including building staff went up 29.85 percent, and for books and periodicals 29.79 percent. An examination of the data for 1953 shows (table 3) that the libraries in cities with populations of 100,000 or more, added .082 of a volume per capita, owned 1.11 volumes per capita, circulated 3.25 volumes per capita, and spent $1.53 per capita for library operation, excluding capital outlay. Of the total disbursements, these libraries devoted 71.7 percent to salaries and 12.7 percent to books and periodicals. 1. By Mary M. Willhoite, Survey Statistician UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN |
