turn, is defined by the formula: number of credit-hours required In the case of students under Public Law 550, "full time" in undergraduate programs is defined by the law as a minimum of 14 er semester-hours per term (or the equivalent number of quarter-hours). 7. A "part-time student"--as applied to undergraduates or to "special or unclassified" students taking work principally at the undergraduate level--is one who is carrying an academic schedule elighter than that of a full-time student. t 8. The term "extension" was not explicitly defined in the present survey, because of lack of standardized usage. Any students classified as "extension" by an institution were tabulated in that category. In general, "extension" students differ from others in one or another of the following respects: (a) time of attendance · (usually in the evening or afternoon, or on Saturdays); (b) amount of time devoted to studies (extension students are typically part time); (c) place of attendance (often at a branch campus or "extension center"); and (d) curriculum (seldom above the "lower division" of undergraduate work; also includes a wide variety of courses of other than college grade). As the term was employed in the present study, "extension" excluded correspondence students. 9. There is no hard-and-fast distinction between enrollment in "adult education" and in "extension." In the questionnaire employed in the present study, the enrollment in "adult education" was restricted to campus or branch-campus students enrolled "in courses of other than college grade." In some institutions, such enrollment is counted as "extension"; in others, as "adult education." Since, however, the same students would not be classified by a given institution in both these categories, the figures for "extension" and for "adult education" as reported in the present publication are mutually exclusive, in the sense of being non-duplicative. |
