Language arts teachers, supervisors, librarians, and administrators in many school systems and State departments of education throughout America are engaged in the preparation and revision of teaching guides and courses of study. Some of these educators are asking the following questions: "How do we get started?" "What do we need to know about our community?" "How do we discover our students' needs and interests?" "What is known about developmental reading and language growth?" "What items of usage and principles of grammar are functional?" "How can we apply research findings in language arts?"

"How can

we gain the cooperation of all of the teachers who will use the guide?" "How can we ensure that the guide will not become a force for fixing patterns, but rather a stimulus for encouraging experimentation and the continuous development of better programs?"

Answers to many of the above questions are at least suggested in the teaching guides and courses of study included in this bibliography. Each reference contains valuable illustrative material for persons working on the language arts curriculum. Undoubtedly, some excellent teaching guides in language arts have not been included. Persons knowing of such guides, published since 1955, are asked to bring them to the attention of the Specialist for Language Arts, Office of Education.

Prices, when known, are stated. A few of the publications listed are out of print; however, most of them can be obtained for examination purposes from
