SURVEY OF BEGINNING TEACHERS: 1953-54

1. A BEGINNING TEACHER is one who has had no previous regular full-time paid teaching experience for a full term in ANY school district or system.

A new teacher with no previous experience, or with only substitute teaching experience, should be counted as a beginning teacher.

2. Include classroom teachers only. Include BOTH white and non-white teachers. Consider teaching principals and head teachers as classroom teachers. Include all beginning teachers, no matter what kind of certificate they have.

3. "Contract salary" means the total amount to be paid for the year. It means the salary before any withholdings or deductions have been taken out. Do NOT include in Column 4 the amount entered in Column 5.

4. If part of the compensation received by a teacher is payment in kind, such as free room and board or free use of a teacherage, state the value of the paymen in kind at the prevailing local rate, in Column 5. If there is no payment in kind, write the word NONE in Column 5.

5. "High school" means any type of high school, including a junior high school, but not a junior college even though organized as part of a secondary school.
