The man is a machinist earning $23 per week in the railroad shops. He is the sole support of his wife and 4-year-old child, and his weekly household expenditures are as follows:

The head of this family is a section foreman in the steel industry and earns $12.50 weekly. He is the sole support of his wife and two children, one of whom is 7 years and the other 12 years old. His weekly household expenditures are as follows:

HOUSEHOLD No. 15.—AMERICan (Negro).

As a foreman of laborers in the steel works, the head of this family earns $15 per week, and also receives $2 per week from other sources. He has two children, one 10 years old, the other 13 years old, and supports his family on his weekly income of $17 as follows:

The head of this family is a fireman in the blast furnace, at $10 a week. His wife's earnings as a dishwasher in a restaurant make a total weekly family income of $12, and out of this sum the following expenditures are made for the support of the man and wife and their two small children:

The head of this family is a foundry man, earning $7.50 per week. His two children, one 11 and the other 17 years old, contribute $5 weekly to the family fund. Out of the total family income of $12.50, the following weekly expenditures for the support of the four members of the family are made:

The head of this family is a roller in the blast furnaces, at $8 each week. His wife is receiving $2 weekly, and out of their combined weekly income of $10 they support themselves and their two small children, aged 2 years and 7 years, as follows:

The following statements, which were compiled during the latter part of February and early part of March, 1909, show the retail prices of meats, groceries, and other commodities which were most generally consumed by wage-earning families. The prices include statements from company and independent stores at the mines and steel plants, and statements from independent stores in the city of Birmingham proper.
