Findings Part IV

Demographics of Album and/or Selection Tapers

In the previous section we saw that people could engage in the home taping of complete albums, individual selections, or both. We recognize that an analysis of all complete album tapers and all selection tapers will obscure some of the differences between album only and selection only tapers. Nevertheless, to describe complete album tapers, for example, it is necessary to look at the characteristics of all album tapers and not just those who only tape complete albums. Thus, in this section we will separately consider the 20.7 million people (11% of the population) who have copied at least one complete album and the 28.2 million people (15% of the population) who have copied at least one selection during the survey year. For ease of presentation, we will first describe complete album tapers, then individual selection tapers, and where warranted, we will point to important differences between these two types of tapers. Generally speaking, however, it will be seen that the vast majority of taping is done by those between 20 and 34 years of age, with at least a high school education, and above average family incomes.
