ARCHITECT OF THE CAPITOL

Botanic Garden

INTRODUCTION

The Architect of the Capitol has served as Acting Director of the United States Botanic Garden (BG) since July 3, 1934. The Architect is responsible for the maintenance, modification and operation of the Garden. The Architect performs his duties in connection with the Garden under the direction of the Joint Committee on the Library, which is charged by law with control over the garden. Day-to-day operations are managed by the Executive Director. This appropriation provides for the operation, care and maintenance of the Conservatory, Administration Building, Bartholdi Park and Fountain, the plant collections, the gardens and grounds, and the Production Facility at D.C. Village.

BOTANIC GARDEN FY 2005 BUDGET

The FY 2005 Botanic Garden Budget consists of an annual budget and a multi-year budget which are summarized in the following table:

The FY 2005 budget of the Botanic Garden includes the Bartholdi Park and
Fountain Renovation Project ($5,100,000).

FULL-TIME EQUIVALENT REQUIREMENTS

The FY 2005 FTE requirement contained in the below table reflects an increase of one FTE over the FY 2004 level of 56 to support National Garden non-construction related activities.

The FY 2005 BG annual budget request is $6,481,000 which represents a 8.0% increase over the FY 2004 annual budget of $6,001,000. The annual budget consists of "Annual Recurring” and “Annual Non-recurring" costs. Annual Recurring costs are broken down into Program Groups (as defined in the AOC General Statement) and Annual Non-recurring costs are broken down into discrete activities. Justifications for the proposed 8.0% increase in the Botanic Garden annual budget for FY 2005 are provided in the section titled, "Analysis of Change.'

MULTI-YEAR BUDGET

The FY 2005 BG multi-year budget request of $5,100,000 will fund the
Bartholdi Park and Fountain Renovation Project. The Agency has received
100% design documentation for this project which is described and justified
in the section titled, "Analysis of Change."
