"Students apply by portfolio. In that portfolio we look at drawings, we look at paintings. So, in essence the student applying as industrial design student may come in with cars, or may come in with products. But chances are, he comes in with landscapes and drawings. So we all start very much the same way. The courses that the industrial design student takes in the beginning are drawing courses, color course, basic design course. Basically the same courses that all of the students take whether they are fine arts majors or crafts major, they will be taking many of the

same courses.

I'd probably say the way we look at transportation of cars that, transportation is a very difficult design problem. It is in fact an extremelly complex design.

One of the things that people don't realize in transportation is that after the vehicle moves around, it is in effect a sculpture, it is a piece of art, whether you sit in it, we're not used to sitting in sculpture. We're not used to driving sculpture around because during the time that ve drive the vehicle, it's a utilitary object. It gets us to the grocery store, it gets us to school, it gets us home and it serves its purpose. I don't know whether its primary purpose or its secondary purpose is its sculptural intent. But we know there is a sculptural intent. We have artists designing. We have artists making it look the way it does. That car is in fact the work of art.

If the integrity is in the vehicle, then the integrity is in the design its important that the integrity of the design be protected. And whether that's the student design or a senior designers design, whether it belongs to an individual or it belongs to a corporation, the integrity of the design deserves the same kind of protection that a design would receive if it were done on a piece of paper. Because there is no less value in a three dimensional design as their is in a two dimensional design.

"Whether you're organizing the visual forms in a painting or you're organizing the visual forms in a piece of sculpture or whether you're organizing the visual forms of an automobile, you're essentially dealing with the same general field of endeavor.

Our designers are all graduates of industrial design schools around the country. Our modelers, most of them have degrees, some even have masters degrees in sculpturing and so on. So we have highly trained people who are working intensively at creating these products.
