On this day Monday the second day of January in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and eighty-two at the request of William Smith of 1st Line Beach, Madras, the holder of the original Bill of exchange [or Hundi] whereof a true copy is on the other side written.

I, . . of Madras, in the Province of Madras in the East Indies, Notary Public duly admitted and sworn, residing and practising in Madras aforesaid, [or, a person appointed by the Governor-General in Council under the provisions of Section 3 of Act XXVI of 1881, (the Negotiable_Instruments Act 1881), to perform the functions of a Notary Public under the said Act], did exhibit the said original, Bill of Exchange [or Hundi], unto Charles Jackson Esq., Agent of the Oriental Bank Corporation at Madras, the persons or corporation upon whom the same is acceptance drawn, and being thereupon demanded, he answered payment that the same would not be accepted [or that he would not pay the same].
