(ACT of March 19th, 1804.)

32. SEC. v. That the secretary of the treasury shall be directed to cause proper light houses to be built, and buoys to be placed, in the situations necessary for the navigation of the sound, between Long Island and the main; and to cause, by proper and intelligent persons, a survey to be taken of the said sound, as far as may be requisite; and to appoint keepers, and otherwise provide for such light houses, at the expense of the United States: Provided, That sufficient land for the accommodation of the respective light houses can be purchased at a reasonable price; and that the legislatures of Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York, shall, respectively, cede the jurisdiction over the same to the United States.

33. SEC. vi. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and directed to cause a sufficient light house to be erected on the south point of Cumberland Island, at the entrance of St. Mary's river, within the state of Georgia; and that, under the direction of the said secretary, there shall be purchased, if the same cannot otherwise be obtained, sufficient land for the erection of the said light house, and accommodations for the better support thereof; Provided, That the legislature of Georgia shall cede the jurisdiction over the same to the United States.

34. SEC. vi. It shall be lawful for the secretary of the treasury, under the direction of the president of the United States, to cause to be expended, in repairing and erecting public piers, in the river Delaware, a sum not exceeding thirty thousand dollars; and that the same be paid out of any moneys in the treasury, not otherwise appropriated: Provided, That the jurisdiction of the site where any such piers may be erected shall be first ceded to the United States, according to the conditions in such case by law provided.

35. SEC. 1. As soon as a cession shall be made by the state of Massachusetts, to the United States, of the jurisdiction over the land proper for the purpose, the secretary of the treasury is authorised to purchase so much land as may be necessary, and provide by contract, to be appointed by the president of the United States, for building a light house on White Head, at the entrance of Penobscot Bay, or any place in its vicinity, that may be deemed preferable by the secretary of the treasury, and to furnish the same with all necessary supplies; and also to agree for the salaries or wages of the persons, who may be appointed by the president for the superintendence and care of the same; and that the president be authorised to make the said appointments.

36, SEC. 1. As soon as the proprietor of the south end or point

of St. Simon's island, in the state of Georgia, shall convey, by good and sufficient titles, unto the United States so much land on the south end of said island, as the president of the United States shall deem sufficient and most proper for the site and accommodation of a light house, and the jurisdiction of the land so to be conveyed shall have been ceded to the United States by the state of Georgia, it shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to provide, by contract, which shall be approved by the president of the United States for building a light house thereon, and for furnishing the same with all necessary supplies; and also to agree for the salaries or wages of the person or persons who may be appointed by the president, for the superintendence and care of the same. And the president is hereby authorised, to make the said appointments.

37. SEC. 1. Under the direction of the president of the United States, it shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to provide, by contract, to be approved by the president, for building a light house at the mouth of the river Mississippi, on such site as the president of the United States may deem most proper for the convenience and accommodation thereof.

SEC. II. As soon as land shall be obtained at a reasonable price, for the purpose, and the jurisdiction of the land so to be obtained shall have been ceded to the United States by the state of North Carolina, it shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to provide, by contract, for building a light house on or near the pitch of Cape Look Out, and the mouth of the Mississippi, with all necessary supplies, and also to agree for the salaries or wages of the person or persons who may be appointed by the president, for the superintendence and care of the same. And the president is hereby authorised, to make such appointments.

38. SEC. IV. It shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury, as soon as the fee of the soil shall have vested in the United States, to cause a beacon to be erected on the north point of Sandy Hook.

37. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and required, to cause two good and sufficient light houses to be erected in Long Island Sound, one to be placed on Watch Hill Point, in the town of Westerly, and state of Rhode Island, and the other on Sands's or Watch Point, in the town of Northampsted, on Long Island, in the state of New York, and to appoint the keepers of the said light houses, (under the direction of the president of the United States,) and otherwise provide for such light houses, at the expense of the United States: Provided, That sufficient land,

for the accommodation of such light houses, can be obtained at a reasonable price, and the legislatures of Rhode Island and New York shall cede the jurisdiction over the same to the United States.

SEC. n. It shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to cause the said light houses so to be constructed, that their lights, on being discovered, may with certainty be distinguished from those of all other light houses heretofore erected in their neighbourhood.

40. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and required, to cause a good and sufficient light house to be erected on Wood Island, or on Fletcher's Neck, in the district of Maine, (selecting either place as the president of the United States may deem most eligible) and to appoint a keeper, and otherwise provide for such light house, at the expense of the United States: Provided, That sufficient land for the accommodation of such light house can be obtained at a reasonable price, and the legislature of Massachusetts shall cede the jurisdiction over the same to the United States.

41. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and directed to cause to be erected the following light houses in the state of Massachusetts:

One on Franklin island, at the mouth of St. George's river, in the district of Maine.

One at West Passamaquoddy head, at the entrance into the bay and harbour of Passamaquoddy, in the district of Maine.

And a double light house at or near Chatham harbour, on the back of Cape Cod.

Provided, sufficient land for the accommodation of the said light houses can be obtained at reasonable prices, and the legislature of Massachusetts shall cede the jurisdiction over the same to the United States. And the secretary of the treasury is hereby authorised to agree for the salaries, or wages, of the persons who may be appointed by the president for the superintendence and care of said light houses, and otherwise to provide for the same, at the expense of the United States.

SEC. II. The secretary of the treasury is required to cause a beacon, or pier, to be erected near the mouth of the harbour of Bridgeport, in the state of Connecticut; and to cause buoys to be fixed on Bluff Shoal, Royal Shoal, northwest Straddle, and southwest Straddle, in the waters of Pamptico Sound, in the state of North Carolina.

42. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and directed to cause a good and sufficient light house to be built at each of the following places; that is to say: on Fair Weather island, in the state of Connecticut, and at Naushawn island, near Tarpaulin cove, in the state of Massachusetts, at such points as the president of the United States may select for those purposes; and to appoint keepers, and otherwise provide for such light houses, at the expense of the United States: Provided, That sufficient ground for the accommodation of said light houses, respectively, can be obtained at a reasonable price: And provided, also, That the legislatures of the states of Connecticut and Massachusetts shall cede the jurisdiction over each place, respectively, to the United States.

43. SEC. II. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and directed to cause the light house at present established on Smith's Point, at the mouth of the river Potowmac, to be taken down, and to cause another good and sufficient one to be built, at such other spot on the said point as the president of the United States may select: Provided, That sufficient ground for the accommodation thereof can be obtained at a reasonable price: And provided also, That the legislature of the state of Virginia shall cede the jurisdiction over the same to the United States. And the secretary the treasury is hereby further authorised and directed to cause the light house heretofore established on North island, at the entrance into Winyaw bay, in the state of South Carolina, to be rebuilt in such manner as may, in his opinion, be most likely to secure its future safety.

44. SEC. 111. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and directed to cause proper and sufficient buoys and stakes to be fixed in and along the channel in Winyaw bay, leading to the harbour of Georgetown, in the state of South Carolina: and also, to cause proper and sufficient buoys and beacons to be placed on, or near, the rocks and shoals in the channel leading into the harbour of Salem, in the state of Massachusetts.

45. SEC. 1. The secretary of the treasury is authorised and required to cause a good and sufficient light house to be erected on Point Judith, in the state of Rhode Island, and to appoint the keeper of the said light house, under the direction of the president of the United States, and otherwise to provide for such light house, at the expense of the United States: Provided, That sufficient land for accommodation of such light house can be obtained at a reasonable price, and the legislature of Rhode Island shall cede the jurisdiction over the same to the United States.

SEC. 11. It shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to cause the said light house to be so constructed that the light, on

being discovered, may with certainty be distinguished from that of other light houses heretofore erected in its neighbourhood.

ACT of March 17, 1808. 4 Bioren, 154.

46. SEC. I. As soon as the jurisdiction of so much of the head land of the south point of the island of Sapelo, in the state of Georgia, as the president of the United States shall deem sufficient for the purpose of erecting a light house and its appurtenances, shall have been ceded to the United States. Provided, the said land can be obtained at a reasonable price, it shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to provide, by contract, which shall be approved by the president of the United States, for building a light house thereon, and furnishing the same with all necessary supplies, and also to agree for the salaries or wages of the person or persons who may be appointed, by the president, for the superintendence and care of building the said light house. And the president is hereby authorised to make the said appointment.

47. SEC. 11. The secretary of the treasury is further authorised and directed to cause to be placed four buoys on the shoals called the South and North Banks of the harbour, or entrance, of the inlet leading to the town of Darien.

48. SEC. 11. The secretary of the treasury is authorised to cause to be erected and placed beacons and buoys at the following places, to wit: two beacons and three buoys near the entrance of Ipswich harbour; three buoys, one on Gurnet rock, one on Boss rock, and one on Dech's flats, and two beacons on the Stony Muscle Bed, near Plymouth harbour; three additional buoys before the harbour of Nantucket, and a buoy or leading mark on the island of Tuckanuck, in the state of Massachusetts; three buoys at or near to the entrance of Connecticut river, and three buoys to be placed at or near the entrance of Great Egg Harbour river, in the state of New Jersey.

ACT of May 1, 1810. 4 Bioren, 312.

49. SEC. 1. On the cession of the jurisdiction of so much land on one of the points forming the entrance of Scituate harbour, in the state of Massachusetts, as the president of the United States shall deem sufficient and most proper for a light house; it shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to provide, by contract, for building a light house of stone thereon, and placing it on the like establishment with other light houses. The number and disposition of the lights shall be such as may distinguish it from those of others.

50. SEC. 11. It shall be the duty of the secretary of the treasury to cause to be erected a column of stone, as a beacon, on a spit of sand, extending from Light house, or from the Great Brewster island, at the entrance of the harbour of Boston, in the state of
