GEORGE HENRY DERN, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Secretary of War ("Highwood," 3301 Rittenhouse Street), was born in Dodge County, Nebr., September 8, 1872; graduated from Fremont (Nebraska) Normal College in 1888 and attended the University of Nebraska in 1893-94; began mining in Utah in 1894; treasurer Mercur Gold Mining and Milling Co., 1894-1900; general manager Consolidated Mercur Gold Mines Co., 1900-1913; various other mining and metallurgical enterprises since 1913; joint inventor with Theodore P. Holt of Holt-Dern ore roaster; member Utah State Senate, 1915-1923; member State council of defense, World War; Governor of Utah two terms, 1925-1932; member American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; Delta Tau Delta; Mason (Knight Templar, thirty-third degree, Shriner); was married on June 7, 1899, to Charlotte Brown; children-Mary Joanna (Mrs. Harry Baxter), John, William Brown, Elizabeth Ida, and James George; Secretary of War, March 4, 1933.
