Today we start our hearings on the budget for the fiscal year 1983 for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and related agencies. This morning we take up first the National Commission on Student Financial Assistance. We have before the committee our friend and colleague from Tennessee, Mr. Boner. Mr. Boner, we are delighted to have you before the committee. You have with you two other gentlemen that you are going to introduce, and you may proceed. Mr. BONER. Thank you, Mr. Chairman. First let me thank you for extending to me the courtesy of introducing to this committee a constituent from Nashville, Tennessee, Mr. David R. Jones, Executive Director of Development at Vanderbilt University. Mr. Jones is appearing before this committee as the recently appointed chairman of the National Commission on Student Financial Assistance. The President made an outstanding choice in selecting Mr. Jones for this responsibility as his distinguished career in education, administration and politics enable him to bring to this position a unique perspective on the importance of student financial assistance. As an example of his outstanding leadership abilities, Mr. Jones recently directed a development campaign at Vanderbilt University which raised more than $181 million. Prior to his work at Vanderbilt, Mr. Jones was Executive Director of the Tennessee Republican Party and, from 1971 to 1974, was Administrative Assistant to Senator James L. Buckley from New York.
