PREFACE

No other business man has greater need of a

knowledge of law than the publisher. In

addition to a general working knowledge of commercial law, the publisher should be thoroughly familiar with the law of libel, copyright, contempt and lotteries and postal regulations. At the same time it is to his advantage to know his rights in relation to subscribers, advertisers and public officials.

It has not been the purpose to write a text book but to compile a digest of court decisions for quick and ready reference, giving specific and authentic information on the rights and privileges of publishers, the restrictions placed on their business and the court's interpretations of many points not specifically dealt with by the statutes of the different states.

Quite a number of cases referred to were never carried up to a court of record and the information given was taken from news items printed at the time in trade papers. While such cases do not carry the same weight as decisions from higher courts, they at least serve to put a publisher on his guard and suggest to him the safest course to follow. WM. W. LOOMIS.
