DAILY EARNINGS.

The series of tables which follows sets forth the wage-earning ability of the various races in the packing industry, by exhibiting the wages received, the yearly earnings, and the family income from all sources. The first table and its charts show the percentage of male employees 18 years of age or over earning each specified amount per day, by general nativity and race.

The preceding table shows that, of the male employees 18 years of age or over for whom information was secured, 98.5 per cent earn at least $1.50 a day, 73.1 per cent earn at least $1.75, 45.9 per cent at least $2, and 20.7 per cent $2.50 or over, while 7.9 per cent earn $3 or more a day. The native and foreign born rank almost exactly alike in the proportion earning at least $1.50 a day; the negroes show the fewest-1.1 per cent earning less than this amount, while the native-born of foreign father, with 2.2 per cent, show the most. The proportion of employees $1.75 a day or over is larger for the native-born of native father white, and the native-born of foreign father, than for the native-born of native father negro, and very much larger for the negroes than for the foreign-born. The proportions earning $2 or over and $2.50 or over per day are largest for the native-born of foreign father, second largest for the nativeborn of native father white, and smallest for the foreign-born. Among the foreign-born, the Swedes, Danes, Norwegians, and Scotch have the largest, and the Greeks, Lithuanians, Poles, and Russians the smallest, proportion of individuals earning at least $1.75 per day. The Swedes, Canadians other than French, Danes, Norwegians, English, and Scotch have the largest, and the Greeks, Japanese, Roumanians, and Bulgarians the smallest proportion of individuals earning at least $2 per day. None of the Bulgarians and Japanese receive less than $1.50 a day, but none of them are paid $3, and only one person of each race, 0.8 and 0.7 per cent, respectively, receive as much as $2.50 per day. Without exception, the races reporting as many as 10 per cent of their number receiving at least $3 a day, and 30 per cent receiving at least $2.50 a day, are the races of early immigration.

A comparison of the principal localities with regard to the wages received by male employees is next presented. The first table shows the per cent of males 18 years of age or over earning $1.75 or more per day, by general nativity and race.

TABLE 28.-Per cent of male employees 18 years of age or over earning $1.75 or over per day, by locality and by general nativity and race.*

In the various tables in this report showing annual earnings allowance is made for time lost during the year. Not computed, owing to small number involved.

This table shows that for each race and for the totals, the proportion of male employees 18 years of age or over earning $1.75 or more per day is largest at Omaha, second largest in Kansas City, and smallest at Chicago. No race in Omaha has less than 90 per cent of its adult males receiving at least $1.75 a day. Whereas, in other localities, the Swedes alone report as high a percentage as that. The Russians in Kansas City, and the Russians and Lithuanians in Chicago, report less than 45 per cent of their males as receiving $1.75 or more per day. What proportion of the adult males in each locality receive as much as $2 per day is set forth in the table next presented.
