TABLE 292.-Per cent of households paying each specified rent per month per apartment, by general nativity and race of head of household.

(STUDY OF HOUSEHOLDS.)

[This table includes only races with 20 or more households reporting. The totals, however, are for all races.]

[blocks in formation]

Of 135 households studied, 3.7 per cent pay under $5 rent per month, 48.9 per cent pay under $7.50, 73.3 per cent under $10, 93.3 per cent under $12.50, and 94.8 per cent under $15 rent per month per apartment. Households the heads of which are of foreign birth show the same per cent paying under $5 rent per month per apartment as that exhibited by the totals for all households studied. In each following specified monthly rental per apartment households the heads of which are foreign-born exhibit a slightly higher per cent than that shown in the totals. Households the heads of which are native-born whites of native father show a slightly smaller proportion paying under $5 and a considerably smaller proportion paying under $7.50, under $10, and under $12.50 than households the heads of which are foreign-born. Households the heads of which are nativeborn of native father show a larger proportion paying over $15 rent per month per apartment than households the heads of which are foreign-born. Households the heads of which are Poles show a greater proportion paying a high monthly rental per apartment than households the heads of which are Bohemians and Moravians.

The table next presented sets forth the range in rent payments per month per room. It shows, by general nativity and race of head of household, the per cent of households paying each specified rent per month per room.

TABLE 293.-Per cent of households paying each specified rent per month per room, by general nativity and race of head of household.

(STUDY OF HOUSEHOLDS.)

[This table includes only races with 20 or more households reporting. The totals, however, are for all races.]

[blocks in formation]

Of the 135 families studied in the above table, it will be seen that less than 1 per cent pay under $1 rent per month per room, as compared with 28.1 per cent paying under $2, 83.7 per cent which pay under $3, and 97 per cent which pay under $4.

Comparing the native-born and foreign-born, it will be seen that, while the former shows none paying under $1 and the entire 100 per cent paying under $4, the latter shows less than 1 per cent paying under $1 and 3.7 per cent paying $4 or over; of those paying under $2 and under $3, the native-born shows a larger proportion of each.

Of the two foreign-born races, the Bohemians and Moravians show a small proportion paying under $1 and the entire 100 per cent paying under $4, while the Poles show none paying under $1 and 7.7 per cent paying $4 or over; of those paying under $2 and under $3, the Poles show a slightly larger proportion of each.

The following table shows, by general nativity and race of head of household, the number and per cent of households paying each specified rent per month per person. This table, as already pointed out in the discussion of the average rent payments, indicates the standard of living and the degree of congestion in the households studied.

TABLE 294.-Per cent of households paying each specified rent per month per person, by general nativity and race of head of household.

(STUDY OF HOUSEHOLDS.)

[This table includes only races with 20 or more households reporting. The totals, however, are for all races.}

[blocks in formation]

The above table shows that of 135 households studied in this locality 60 per cent pay under $2 rent per month per person, 83.7 per cent under $3, and 8.1 per cent $4 or over.

As between the foreign-born and native-born households, it will be noted that while the former report slightly larger proportions paying under each specified amount than are shown for the total number of households studied the latter, with the exception of that proportion paying less than $4, report proportions paying under each specified amount considerably below those shown in the total.

A comparison of the Bohemian and Moravian with the Polish households discloses the fact that none of the former, as compared with 7.7 per cent of the latter, pay as much as $4 rent per month per person; also that the proportion of the former paying under each specified amount is larger than that of the latter.

As compared with the native white, the Polish households, it will be noted, show considerably larger proportions paying under each specified amount.

BOARDERS AND LODGERS.

The extent to which the practice of keeping boarders prevails in the community is set forth in the following table. It shows, by general nativity and race of head of household, the number and per cent of households keeping boarders or lodgers.

TABLE 295.-Number and per cent of households keeping boarders or lodgers, by general nativity and race of head of household.

[blocks in formation]

The above table shows that of 339 households studied 12.1 per cent are keeping boarders or lodgers. A comparison shows that a much larger per cent of foreign-born households keep boarders or lodgers than do native-born.

Where percentages have been computed, it will be seen that the proportion of Polish households, 39.7 per cent, keeping boarders or lodgers is extremely high when compared with the households of other races. Lithuanians, Bohemians and Moravians, Germans, and native-born whites of native father, in the order mentioned, each shows a small per cent of households keeping boarders or lodgers, the Lithuanians alone reporting a proportion in excess of 5 per cent.

The following table shows the average number of boarders or lodgers per household, according to general nativity and race of head of household. The averages are based (1) on the total number of households, and (2) on the number of households keeping boarders or lodgers:

Of the 39 households whose heads were native-born, only one has boarders or lodgers, while of the total number of 300 households whose heads were born abroad 40 keep boarders or lodgers. Of the foreignborn households, the average number of boarders or lodgers per household, according to the number of households keeping boarders or lodgers, is 3.18, while the number of native-born households keeping boarders or lodgers is too small to compute the percentage. On the basis of the total number of households, the average number of boarders or lodgers per household of the foreign-born is 0.42, and for the native-born 0.03. Among the foreign-born, the Polish households show the highest average of boarders or lodgers, based on the number of households keeping boarders or lodgers.

SIZE OF APARTMENTS OCCUPIED.

The range in size of apartments or houses occupied is exhibited by the table next presented, which shows, by general nativity and race of head of household, the per cent of households occupying apartments of each specified number of rooms.

TABLE 297.-Per cent of households occupying apartments of each specified number of rooms, by general nativity and race of head of household.

(STUDY OF HOUSEHOLDS.)

[This table includes only races with 20 or more households reporting. The totals, however, are for all races.]

[blocks in formation]

The above table shows a large proportion of households occupying apartments of three or four rooms. Only 1.2 per cent have apartments of one room, and but 7.4 per cent six rooms, and 4.1 per cent

seven or more rooms.

The Bohemian and Moravian show the greatest proportion of their number occupying three-room apartments, the German and Lithuanians have their greater numbers in four-room apartments, and the Polish show about one-fifth of their number to be occupying apartments of either four or five rooms. The whites native-born of native father have one-third of their number in apartments of four rooms.

SIZE OF HOUSEHOLDS STUDIED.

The following table shows the range in size of households by exhibiting the per cent of households of each specified number of persons, according to general nativity and race of head of household.
