The following table shows by general nativity and race of individual the proportion of male employees within each specified age group: TABLE 247.-Per cent of male employees within each age group, by general nativity. and race.

(STUDY OF EMPLOYEES.)

[This table includes only races with 40 or more males reporting. The totals, however, are for all races.]

[blocks in formation]

In the foregoing table almost equally large proportions are 20 to 24, 35 to 44, and 25 to 29 years of age. None are less than 14, and but 4.8 per cent 55 or over.

The proportions of the foreign-born races and of the native-born of native father from 14 to 19 are all small, but the proportions of the recent immigrant races 20 to 24 and 25 to 29 years of age are quite large, while the proportions of the old immigrant races in these age groups are very low. The proportions of all the races 30 to 34 years of age vary little from the 13.4 of the totals, but from this point on the proportions of the recent immigrant races become smaller and those of the old immigrant races larger, until finally less than 2 per cent of any of the former races report 55 years or over, as compared with from 12.5 per cent to 17.8 per cent of the latter.

Summarizing, the majority of each of the old immigrant races are 35 years of age or over, large proportions being 45 or over, while the majority of the recent immigrant races and those whose fathers were born in England or Germany are less than 30, the majority of the Servians and Slovaks, and large proportions of the other recent immigrant races being less than 25.

CHAPTER VII.

GENERAL PROGRESS AND ASSIMILATION.

Ownership of homes-Status of children in the households studied-Citizenship→ Ability to speak English-[Text Tables 248 to 258, and General Tables 153 to 161].

OWNERSHIP OF HOMES.

The ownership of a home by an immigrant family may be taken as an indication of permanent settlement. The tendency in this respect may be seen from the following table, which shows according to general nativity and race of head of family the number and per cent of families who own their homes.

TABLE 248.-Number and per cent of families owning home, by general nativity and race of head of family.

[blocks in formation]

A significant fact shown by the preceding table is that 45.1 per cent of the families whose heads were of foreign birth, as contrasted with only 11.1 per cent of those whose heads were native-born of native father, own their homes. Of the families whose heads were born abroad, the highest proportion owning their homes is shown by the Germans, followed by the Croatians and Poles, in the order named.

STATUS OF CHILDREN IN THE HOUSEHOLDS STUDIED.

The tendency of the children of native and foreign birth to attend. school or to go to work is considered in the table next submitted. This table shows by general nativity and race of father and birthplace of child the number and per cent of children, 6 and under 16 years of age, in the households studied, at home, at school, and at work.

TABLE 249.-Number and per cent of children 6 and under 16 years of age, at home, at school, and at work, by general nativity and race of father and by birthplace of child.

(STUDY OF HOUSEHOLDS.)

[This table includes only races with 20 or more children born in the United States and also 20 or more born abroad. The native-born of native father are shown for comparative purposes.]

All of the native-born white children of native father in the table above are shown to be at school. The Croatian children who were born abroad and whose fathers were foreign-born, show a slightly larger proportion at school and at home, but a much smaller percentage at work, than those who were born in the United States of foreign-born father.

CITIZENSHIP.

In the following table the present political condition of foreignborn male employees who have been in the United States five years or over, and who were 21 years of age or over at time of coming, is shown according to race of individual:
