Information concerning 13,626 foreign-born husbands was obtained in this industry, of which number 76.4 per cent report wives in the United States and 23.6 per cent report wives abroad.

With the exception of the French Canadians and Danes, all of whom report wives in the United States, it will be noted that each race reports a certain proportion of husbands with wives abroad, the proportion of husbands of these races reporting wives abroad varying from 0.9 per cent of the Irish to 90.2 per cent of the Bulgarians. Of those races in which the proportion of husbands with wives in the United States is in excess of the proportion shown in the total for all husbands, it will be noted that the proportion of Irish husbands is slightly in excess of Canadian other than French, English, Swedish, Scotch, German, Bohemian and Moravian, Norwegian, Hebrew other than Russian, Russian Hebrew, and Dutch, in the order named, while of those reporting a proportion of husbands with wives in the United States below that shown in the total it will be noted that, as compared with the proportion of Poles, 71.9 per cent of whom report wives in the United States, the proportion of Bulgarians, Greeks, and Servians with wives in this country is extremely low, the Bulgarians reporting the smallest proportion of husbands with wives in the United States, or 9.8 per cent.

The proportion of foreign-born husbands who report wives abroad is considerably larger at Kansas City than at South Omaha and slightly larger at South Omaha than at Chicago. The Irish and Lithuanians have a larger proportion of husbands reporting wives abroad at Chicago than at either Kansas City or South Omaha, the Magyars and Swedes have a larger proportion of husbands reporting wives abroad at South Omaha than at either Chicago or Kansas City, and all other races for which data are presented, except the Bohemians and Moravians, have a larger proportion of husbands reporting wives abroad at Kansas City than at either South Omaha or Chicago. The proportion of Bohemian and Moravian husbands reporting wives abroad is the same at Chicago as at South Omaha.

The extent to which husbands who immigrated to this country without their wives send for them after designated periods of residence is indicated by the table next submitted, which shows, by race of husband and by years husband has been in the United States, the per cent of foreign-born husbands who report wife abroad.

The preceding table shows that 87.9 per cent of the total number of Greek husbands have wives abroad, slightly less than 80 per cent of Servian husbands have wives in Europe, while Roumanian, Russian, and Croatian husbands report over 50 per cent having wives abroad; Lithuanians, Magyars, Slovaks, and Poles also show considerable proportions of husbands having wives in Europe. Irish husbands show less than 1 per cent having wives abroad. Canadians other than French show 1 per cent. English 1.5 per cent, and Swedes 1.9 per cent of husbands having wives in Europe. Of husbands having a residence of under five years Greeks show over 90 per cent having wives abroad, while Servians, Russians, Roumanians, Croatians, Lithuanians, and Slovenians exhibit between 68 and 79 per cent of husbands having wives abroad. Only 5.3 per cent of English husbands in this group report having wives in Europe. Of husbands having a residence in the United States from five to nine years Servians show the highest per cent, followed in the order named by Greeks, Croatians, Roumanians, and Slovenians, while Irish show small proportions and English no husbands in this group having wives in Europe. Of husbands with a residence of ten years or over Croatians and Slovenians show over 20 per cent having wives abroad, Lithuanians, Slovaks, and Magyars in the order named show the next largest proportion, while Germans and Irish show less than 1 per cent, and Canadians other than French and Bohemians and Moravians show no husbands reporting wives in Europe.

VISITS ABROAD.

As regards the tendency among employees of foreign birth to visit their native lands the following table shows visits abroad made by them according to sex, years in the United States, and race. accompanying chart gives data for male employees only.
