The following table shows, by locality and general nativity and race of head of household, the average number of persons per apartment. The totals, however, are for all races.] Upon referring to the totals in the preceding table it is seen that the households whose heads were foreign-born show for the industry as a whole and for each locality a higher average number of persons per apartment as compared with the households whose heads were of native birth. Among the foreign-born races all households show a larger average number of persons per apartment in South Omaha than in Chicago. On the other hand, the German and Polish households have a higher average number of persons per apartment in Kansas City than in the two other localities. It is noteworthy that the best as well as the worst showing is made by the Poles, the households of this race having an average of only 4.23 persons per apartment in Chicago and of 7.35 persons in Kansas City. The households of all races whose heads were foreign-born have a higher average number of persons per apartment in each locality than the households whose heads were native-born of native father. The range in the number of persons per room and for all the households studied is set forth in the table next presented according to general nativity and race of head of household. Of 1,039 households reporting complete data the average number of persons per room is 1.35. A large proportion of the households, 75.3 per cent, have one or more persons to the room, while a much smaller per cent have two or more and an almost inappreciable proportion have four or more. The average number of persons per room in the households of the native-born of native father and the nativeborn of foreign father is practically the same, but the number in the foreign households is much greater. The per cent of households having one, two, and three or over to the room is much greater in households of foreign-born than in the native-born of native father, but a slightly larger proportion of native-born of native father have four or more to the room than of the foreign-born. Of the foreign households reporting complete data the Croatians show the highest average number per room, closely followed by the Slovaks and Roumanians, while the English show the lowest average number per room. The Slovaks, with 100 per cent, show the highest per cent of households with one or more to the room. The English, Swedes, and Irish are the only foreign-born races reporting complete data with less than 50 per cent of the households averaging one or more to the room. The English and North Italians are the only foreign races not reporting any household with an average of two or more persons to the room; the Slovaks report the highest proportion of households with two or more persons to the room. The Poles and Croatians report much higher proportions of households with three or more persons to the room, while the English, Irish, North Italians, and Swedes report none. The Croatians are the only foreign race reporting more than 1 per cent of the households averaging four or more persons to the room, while none of the other races, except the Bohemians and Moravians and Poles, show any. The following table shows, by locality and by general nativity and race of head of household, the per cent of households having two or more persons per room. The totals, however, are for all races.] Upon comparing the totals in the preceding table for the native and foreign households, the households whose heads are of foreign birth exhibit for the industry as a whole and for all localities a much larger proportion having 2 or more persons per room. The native households show 7.7 per cent in South Omaha, 13.3 per cent in Kansas City, and none in Chicago with 2 or more persons per room, as compared with 29.7 per cent of the foreign households in South Omaha, 39.9 per cent in Kansas City, and 9.9 per cent in Chicago. Among the households of foreign birth, a smaller degree of congestion is exhibited by those of each race in Chicago than in either Kansas City or South Omaha. The German households have a smaller proportion both in Chicago and South Omaha than in Kansas City with 2 or more persons per room, while the Polish households show the largest proportion of such households in Kansas City. The Germans, with only 6.5 per cent of their households in Chicago having 2 or more persons per room, afford the best showing of any race in any locality, while the worst exhibit is made by the 52.7 per cent of the Polish households in Kansas City having 2 or more persons per room. The table next presented shows, by locality and by general nativity and race of head of household, the average number of persons per room. The totals, however, are for all races.] In the foregoing table the total number of households whose heads were foreign-born exhibit a higher average number of persons per room in each locality as compared with the households whose heads were native-born. Both for the native-born and foreign-born, the highest average is shown for the households in Kansas City. All of the households represented by the four races of foreign birth have a higher average number of persons per room in South Omaha than in Chicago. The German and Polish households show the highest average in Kansas City, and the Irish in South Omaha. In each of the three localities, the worst showing is made by the Polish households. The range in the number of persons per sleeping room is shown according to general nativity and race of head of household in the table next submitted. The above table shows that in the 1,039 households studied in this industry, the average number of persons per sleeping room is 2.69. It further shows a larger average number of persons per sleeping room among the foreign-born households than among those of the nativeborn of native father, or native-born of foreign father, in the order named. A comparison of the various foreign-born households discloses the fact that the Slovak households, reporting an average of 3.22 persons per sleeping room, show a slightly larger average than the Croatian or Polish, a considerably larger average than the Bohemian and Moravian, Roumanian, German, or Magyar, and a very much larger average number of persons per sleeping room than the Russian, North Italian, South Italian, Lithuanian, Swedish, Irish, or English households in the order named, the English households reporting an average of only 1.87. 81 Considered in detail, it will be noted that of the 1,039 households per cent have 2 or more, 44.3 per cent 3 or more, and 20.8 per cent 4 or more, while 8.2 and 3.5 per cent have 5 or more and 6 or more persons per sleeping room, respectively. As between the foreign-born households and those of the nativeborn of native father it will be noted that a larger proportion of the former than of the latter have each specified number of persons per sleeping room, the greatest difference between the native-born of native father and foreign-born occurring in those households having 3 or more and 4 or more persons per sleeping room. Comparing the foreign-born, it will be seen that the Croatian households report a slightly larger proportion having 2 or more persons per sleeping room than do the Slovak, Polish, Bohemian, and Moravian or German, a considerably larger proportion than the North Italian, and a very much larger proportion than the Lithuanian, Swedish, English, or Irish households.
