that good conditions in life make for GOOD ACTING. Only three voted against the proposition.

Some of the "union busters" kid themselves in figuring that they are possessed of a "various, vigorous and versatile mind" but they fail to reckon that what Owen

Meredith said on this subject also applies to

the men in the ranks of organized labor.

Better get together-fellows!

GOMPERS URGES CANAL PROTECTION AGAINST ENEMY

President Gompers, in an inspiring address on his recent visit to the Panama Canal Zone during which he was accom panied by the Committee of which General President Hedrick was a member, said:

"I suggest this thought to you-be well prepared physically to protect the canal against any enemy. The greatest danger is not from without, the greatest menace is that of a discontent within. What is an essential requisite is that the men and women working and living in this Zone shall be so thoroughly devoted to the spirit of the canal, the purpose of the canal-not merely its commercial value, but its value as an outpost and protector of our institutions and our civilization and anything and everything that contributes toward the acceleration of that spirit, the exuberance of that enthusi asm, should be done to inspire a devotion to these ideals and purposes, making per manent forever and ever the advance of the American ideals of civilization."

Mr. Gompers also made a plea for co-operation between nations and told of the work of organized labor in fighting the wage-slashing campaign following the Armistice. In closing, he urged the value of constructive work and orderly progress, saying:

"Our work, our movement, is of a constructive character. We are opposed to autocracy or dictatorship, and we are just as much opposed to the dictatorship of wealth as we are to the dictatorship of the proletariat. We want neither-we don't want the rule of the madman nor do we want the rule of the man on horseback.

"Democracy, reason, intelligence, co-operating in one great effort to make this world better. We cannot bring about the improvement of the conditions of the world by a turn of the hand or a passing of a resolution or a law, but we can do something to make today a better day than yesterday, and tomorrow a better day than today, and tomorrow, each a better day than the one that has gone before. Not a social revolution, but evolution, every hour and every day of every year to that end."

Adequate and ever increasing wages is a stimulant to industry, necessary to the very life of industry.

Why

Evelop the American Plan
the American Flag?

in

T

HERE exists no man or set of men who are more greatly admired by Trade Unionists than real two-fisted upstanding and four-square fighters-the type of men who believe in a principle as a rock-ribbed, unbreakable and unalterable proposition, but when avarice and self gain inspire associations and individuals to hide behind the American flag, then it is time for decent minded men, as organized labor is doing, to expose the type mentioned as hypocrites and wanton jugglers of facts, whereby they are stamped as anything but good American citizens.

We of organized labor are all more or less familiar with the true attitude of the type of men who are insisting on the "Open Shop" as an American Plan, when in fact and in truth the general public have seemed not to have studied deep enough into the methods employed, and propaganda spread by the disciples of the union busting aggregation to differentiate between true Americanism and SELFISH AGGRANDIZEMENT. For the man who has not thought from the angle of real humanity is too prone to accept the spurious propaganda as representing true conditions, when the contrary really exists, for the American Plan is nothing American at all, but a camouflage used in an attempt to destroy organized labor and the plan is nothing less than a union busting attempt, which, thanks to the militant co-operation of the workers under organized labor's banner, has gone wide of its mark and is now serving as a boomerang, as will be noted by reading the following statements in parallel columns by two eminent publicists:

In warning an audience of a Chamber of Commerce that labor spies do not pay and that employers who use them deserve to fail in business, Sherman Rogers of "The Outlook" said:

"Any employer that employs liars to go down and get dope in their plant is going to have hosts of labor trouble, and he ought to have a thousand times more than he has got. If you have not foremen with enough human kindness, with enough gift, and if you yourself can't go down there, but have got to go and hire a born liar to tell you about your men, well, you ought to go out of business. Any man that will go down and double-cross man that he breaks bread with down in the plants, is just a low enough snake to come into the office and double-cross you, and he always does just that.

a

"If you men want to know what causes labor troubles you just go home tonight, close the bathroom door and take a look in the looking glass, and you will be looking at ninetenths of the cause of your trouble in your plant."

Evans Woollen, President of the TRUST COMPANY DIVISION of the American Bankers Association, in a recent extraordinary address to that Association has this to say:

"With the Bourbon who holds that property rights, unchangeable in all its aspects, is not discussable in any respect, there is no chance for understanding. There is chance for clash. He promotes the class consciousness that is his danger and the danger of those whose business it is to conserve property in the future. If we who believe in our political and social institutions, recognize this fact, that FREE speech, short always of incitement to law. breaking, is the right of those whose ideas we dislike not less than those whose ideas we like, we promote the chance for understanding." Concerning the "open shop": "The open shop is called the 'American plan' and in the fight against the union, patriotism is invoked. The refusal of the unionist to work with the non-unionist is condemned as an unpatriotic denial of an American right. •

Continuing, Mr. Woollen says: "It seems expedient to one (employer) to employ union. ists, to another to employ non-unionists. Here, too, is no question of patriotism. The distinction is worth making because the solu tion of the problem of capital and labor is a matter of understanding and it does not make for understanding or for good will that one side tries to envelop its cause with the flag."

It would seem that the interests who fostered the adoption of the slogan of the "AMERICAN PLAN" were encouraged to this viewpoint by men of a type who are not happy unless they muck in the mud, these carrions of distrust being of the type who promote anything for money. This is a type of publicity man viewed with disgust and contempt by other publicity men of vision and clearness of thought, who dream of things constructive and a greater and better humanity. Added to the class mentioned above is the type of private employment agencies known as efficiency agencies, who follow as a greater source of profit, the business of spying on honest workers, and who, through their inhuman and scurrilous methods, have endeavored to substitute in the minds of the public our Banner of Freedom" for the dirty rag of discontent, which through their machinations many wolfish employers have furled to the windward.

It is a source of supreme gratification to observe that publicists of the type of Sherman Rogers and Evans Woollen do not hesitate to roundly condemn the attitude of men who prostitute the American flag in the reprehensible manner which the union busters have tried to do.
