To understand it, one has to go to the sources that afford the clearest picture of how the city has developed. This history is an attempt to provide one such view. Since 1910, the Commission of Fine Arts has had the unique opportunity to guide the planning and the architectural growth of the Federal City. Most of what we see in the heart of the Capital today is the result of this continuing guidance, a service which has become increasingly necessary to the preservation of those qualities that distinguish Washington from the other great American cities.
