MR. W. H. MALLOCK is writing a new romance, which will deal with politics and principles, and the antagonism between the two.

MR. J. CONRIED MARTEN has written a work entitled "The Real Countess Guiccioli," to be a companion volume to Jeaffreson's "The Real Lord Byron."

IT is stated that High Lights," the anonymous novel lately published by Houghton, Mifflin & Co., was written by a daughter of Mrs. A. D. T. Whitney.

MR. F. MARION CRAWFORD has written a short story named "The Upper Berth," which will appear in a London Christmas annual edited by Mr. Henry Norman.

SIDNEY LUSKA, author of "As it Was Writ ten," is said to be Henry Harland, a clerk of the Surrogate Court, New York. He is not a Jew, as has been surmised.

LEOPOLD VON RANKE hopes to complete his great "Universal History," in 1888. A sixth volume is about to appear-and the historian has just passed his ninetieth birthday.

THE author of "The Bar Sinister," recently published by Cassell & Co. is said to be Mrs. Jeannette Walworth, of New York, a Southern woman by birth and training, and a writer of long experience.

PROF. CHARLES F. RICHARDSON has been for some years at work on a "History of American Literature," of which the first volume will probably appear next year. It is planned to be complete in three volumes.

DR. W. T. HARRIS, whose exposition of Hegel's Logic in the series of Griggs's Philosophical Classics was promised in December, finds that he requires more time than expected, and the book will therefore be delayed a few weeks.

MR. ANDREW CARNEGIE will publish, through Charles Scribner's Sons, next spring a book entitled "The Triumph of Democracy: Fifty Years' March of the Republic.' He will contrast the growth of this country with the growth of Great Britain during the past half century.

MISS MAMIE DICKENS, the eldest daughter of Charles Dickens, has written a short biography of her father, which Cassell & Co. will issue in their The World's Workers series. Miss Dickens has condensed the story of her father's public life and has taken pains to show him as he was at home, with his family and at his work, and she has given what will, perhaps, be regarded as the pleasantest pen picture of the great novelist.
