Mrs. Sherwood was the wife of an officer in the Union army, and shared in the vicissitudes of field and camp and hospital. Her poems depicting the uprising of the North, the arming for the field, the march, the fight, the charge, the repulse, the loss of comrades, the grief, heroism, and final victory-the shifting lights and shadows of soldierlife-are at once simple, strong, and effective. *Smyth, Newman, D.D. Y., Harper, 1885. 2 v. 25+528; 10+483 p. maps and il. O. cl., $10.

"The author gives a complete and detailed account of all that has been done to open the great valley to the commerce of the world since he himself emerged from the Dark Continent after the memorable journey by which the Chambezi and the Lualaba were shown to be no other

than the Congo. His own explorations and negotiations with chiefs and the diplomatic proceedings by which an enormous tract in mid-Africa was fashioned into a Free State under the auspices of the International Association are recounted with painstaking care. His reflections upon the resources of this vast region, and the possibilities of promoting trade and civilization, are of the highest importance, since he is perhaps the only man whose opinion on this subject is to be accepted by French geographers, by Continental courts, and by Manchester factors as authoritive. The numerous tribes of Congo Land, with whom Mr. Stanley concluded treaties and opened trade from Vivi to Stanley Falls, are described in detail."-New York Daily Tribune.
