uncut. Having untrimmed margins: said of a book. underlay. A piece of paper or card placed or pasted under certain types or parts of a cut, in a form, to bring them up to the proper level.

upper case.

(1) That one of a pair of cases which contains the capitals, small capitals, accents, fractions, etc. (2) Capital letters: often attributively. Compare CASE.

verso.

A left-hand page. Compare RECTO.

wave rule. A type-high brass rule, the face of which

shows a wave line: (~ˇˇˇˇˇ).

white line. A blank line filled with quadrats.

white page. A blank page.

wire. To fasten together the signatures of a book with wire instead of thread.

wrong font. Belonging to some other font: said of a type that is not of a corresponding size, face, etc.,

with those with which it is in contact: usually abbreviated-w. f.
