any written in his old age, are perfect in poetical technique; so it is claimed by rhetoricians. A sonnet is the most difficult of construction of form of verse. It is a complete poem, consisting of but fourteen lines. Its rhyming is peculiar and not attained without care and practice. The sonnet entitled "Three Friends of Mine" is in memory of Sumner, Agassiz, the great scientist, and Felton, a professor of Greek at Harvard. The sonnet reveals the depth of affection which dwelt in the heart of the aged poet. He remembers not their outward form, but only that divine something which made each appear "the perfect man" as designed by the Creator. THREE FRIENDS OF MINE. In the poem of nine stanzas, addressed to Charles Sumner, the poet dwells on the true worth of his illustrious friend, his vigorous advo "When I remember them, those friends cacy of right, and his lifelong strug of mine, gle to abolish slavery in the United Who are no longer here, the noble States. three, In the poem are some consolatory thoughts which attract the reader's attention. Though our lives on earth are incomplete, the great plan designed by the Creator and wrought out in the future, is a whole, even as the arch with its reflection in the water is a perfect circle. Longfellow concludes the poem with a most beautiful comparison. based on the fact that it requires time for light to travel. The poet sees a resemblance between the light emanating from a star which may have gone out of existence in its past form, and the life of a good man who has departed from this world. CHARLES SUMNER. We suggest that a Stake library committee of not more than three persons be appointed in each Stake. 2. It shall be the duty of this committee to see that all books belonging to the Stake traveling library are properly covered. labeled, and numbered, also catalogued in a book kept for the purpose. 3. Books shall be boxed in suitable boxes and kept in circulation throughout the Stake. Boxes containing groups shall be numbered and catalogued by the Stake committee. 4. The Stake committee should keep a strict record of the whereabouts of all boxes and books. 5. Wards shall be held responsible for the condition of books when they are returned to Stake librarian. WARDS. If a book is not returned within the given time, a fee of five cents a week shall be charged; and if the book be damaged, the borrower shall pay for the same. 3.
