The people of Mrs. Woolsey (the authoress of "Republics vs. Woman ") have been associated with both colonial and republican America. Her an cestors, paternal and maternal, helped found the United States Republic and she can therefore speak more authoritatively and understandingly upon the broken promises of democracy to women than almost any other person. Her maternal kinsman Captain Barlow, of the English Navy,* was sent to America as an explorer by Queen Elizabeth in 1584. Joel Barlow (born in 1755, and American Ambassador to France in 1811) and she had the same ancestor.
