COMMENT.

The Office made a gain of nearly 3000 cases in January. There are now 7 divisions whose oldest date is under 4 months; 22 under 5 months; 38 under 6 months; 52 under 7 months and only one over 7 months.

Legislation.

The pending Trade Mark bill has been given a two day hearing before the joint committee of the Senate and House. It has been revised to some extent in view of the hearings and will probably be favorably reported.

The House Committee on Patents has been considering a bill amending the copyright law so as to give an applicant the option of patenting or copyrighting a design. As the result of the discussion it seems quite possible that the bill as finally reported may limit the protection of such devices to a copyright and stop the further issuance of design patents.

Blodgett's Hotel, also known as "Great Hotel" and "Union Pacific Hotel." Built in 1793 by Samuel Blodgett on E Street between 7th and 8th. Aug. 22, 1800, the first formal playhouse in Washington, the United States Theatre, opened in the building. Purchased by the Government in 1810 and occupied by the Patent Office and the Post Office, until it burned Dec. 15, 1836, destroying 7000 models. The only public building not burned by the British in 1814, the 13th Congress held one session here. Patent Office was in the City Hall from 1836 until 1840, when the present building was ready.

ELIMINATING APPEALS.

The application for a method of eliminating one appeal appearing in this issue, probably contains allowable subject matter but seems to be headed for interference with the method proposed in an article by Mr.
