other than by the Constitution and the Rules of Practice, and with the approval of the Classification Examiner, are not joined, neither is their ceremony allowable, and although the Commissioner has no power to cancel a patentable estate, he may grant unto either or both, another interfering patentable estate without alimony.

(To the Groom). Ex parte Hezekiah Jeremiah. Highbrow, wilt thou have this woman to be thy wedded wife to live together in accordance with the Commissioner's Orders in the state of co-patentability? Wilt thou make her case "Special"? Wilt thou withhold and restrain her, protect her against Inventors and Attorneys, and forsaking all thriftiness, spend all you can make, upon and for her, and if she live 12 months without making a response wilt thou not hold her to be abandoned?

(To the Bride). In re Pauline Margery Peachblossom, wilt thou comply with the Rules of Practice and the act of 1905? Wilt thou examine him, and search his pockets, and even when they are empty, love and cherish him till you find someone else, refraining from and avoiding infringement and entangling foreign alliances under the Nolan act?

(Groom). I take thee Bride to have and to hold, sink or swim, survive or perish, so long as you do your part and promise to love you (nearly) all the time.

(Bride). I take thee, Groom, to have and to hold, wet or dry, drunk or sober, hot or cold, to love and to cherish, to be or not to be, so long as you do your part.

Forasmuch as this groom and this bride have consented together in patentable ceremony and have witnessed the same in this Office without appeal to the Board, I pronounce them joined assunder in the name of the Nolan Act and the International Convention.

And I charge you, my good people (in addition to my regular fee) to remember that harmony is much to be desired. If you bride, can find a spark of divinity in this man, water it, and always mark well the words of Patrick Henry who married a woman twelve years older than himself and said, "Give me Liberty or give me Death".

The worst fears were realized, for before the groom could claim his bride she was seized and carried away by "Death," the groom fainted and the photographer's blinding flash light broke up the party.

Among the distinguished guests present were Commissioner and Mrs. Robertson, Mr. and Mrs. Hostetler, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Smith, and Dr. and Mrs. Willard N. Holmes.

COMMENT.

It was evidently found very early in the history of the Patent Office that it was inadvisable for one Commissioner to disturb a decision made by his predecessor.

Mr. Karl Fenning, Assistant Commissioner of Patents, while in Dublin, Ireland during the past summer, found in the Library of Trinity College, what seemed to be an icial publication of the United States Patent Office ving "Information to persons having business to transt at the Patent Office." This publication which bore e name of Gideon & Co., Printers, Washington, D. C., id was dated December 11, 1851, included the following atement:
