PATENT OFFICE OUTING.

The annual picnic outing and automobile excursion took place October 3rd, the objective point this time being Sugar Loaf Mountain, about fifty miles distant from Washington. The route lay over a new State road leading from Rockville west through Poolsville, Maryland, and the caravan started from Chevy Chase Circle. A splendid autumn day, fine roads, picnic dinner and a climb up the mountain furnished exhilarating entertainment and enjoyment for those in attendance.

COMMENT.

Last June Congress authorized the appointment of 97 temporary assistant examiners to aid in reducing the number of cases on hand. Up to Nov. 1, 107 such appointments have been made but 56 of these have been transferred to the permanent force to fill vacancies therein. There are thus 36 temporary positions still open; it is expected that these will be filled within the next two or three months, 12 appointments have been made from the probationary register and two of these have since fully qualified. About 200 men took the October entrance examination of whom 20 were already on the probationary list.
