[blocks in formation]

I would like to request that the Members of the Committee on
Energy and Commerce accept and publish as a Committee Print
"Public Policy Implications of Advanced Television Systems".

This report contains a compilation of the views and comments of representatives of various government, industry and academic entities outlining strategies for optimizing the involvement of American industries in the development of advanced television technologies, or High Definition Television (HDTV). These "action memos" were submitted at the Subcommittee's request following a series of oversight hearings on HDTV during the 100th Congress. During the 101st Congress, the Subcommittee will continue its oversight in this area in the interest of developing a national strategy for the adoption of advanced television technologies.

In light of the important economic and strategic implications of the development of HDTV, I am confident that this report will serve as a useful compilation to inform and educate my colleagues on the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Thank you for your support of the Subcommittee's efforts in this and many other important areas.

With best wishes.

Sincerely,

Edward J. Markey

Edward J.Markey

Chairman
