Among the foreign-born each race, with the exception of the German, which shows 1.6 per cent, constitutes less than 1 per cent, while among the native-born of foreign father those whose fathers were born in each specified country other than Germany and Ireland constitute each less than 1 per cent of all employees for whom information was obtained, those whose fathers were born in Germany and Ireland constituting 7.3 and 1.8 per cent of all employees, respectively. CAR BUILDING AND REPAIRING—TOTAL. Upon information obtained for 21,955 male employees of this industry it will be seen that 54.9 per cent are foreign-born, 16 per cent native-born of foreign father, while 27.3 and 1.8 per cent, respectively, are native whites and negroes born of native father. Among the foreign-born only those races constituting each as much as 1 per cent of all employees in the industry for whom information was obtained are considered. Of these the Poles, with 12.3 per cent, constitute a slightly larger proportion than do the Germans, who in turn constitute a slightly larger proportion than do the Swedes or Slovaks, who constitute 4.9 and 3.8 per cent, respectively, of the total number of employees. Of the others thé Magyars, Lithuanians, English, North Italians, Russians, Dutch, Irish, South Italians, Croatians, Bohemians and Moravians, and Ruthenians constitute proportions of the total number of employees ranging from 2.9 to i per cent. Among the native-born of foreign father those whose fathers were born in Germany, Ireland, and England constitute 8.1, 3, and 1.2 per cent, respectively, while those native-born male employees whose fathers were born in other countries constitute in no instance a proportion of the total number of employees in excess of 0.5 per cent. CUTLERY AND TOOLS. The table next presented shows the number and percentage of male employees of each race for whom information was secured engaged in the manufacture of cutlery and tools. Of 826 male employees shown in the preceding table for whom information was secured, 63.1 per cent are foreign-born, 18.5 per cent are native-born whites of native father, and 18.4 per cent are native-born of foreign father. Of the employees who are native-born of foreign father, those whose fathers were born in Ireland and Germany show 5.6 per cent and 5.2 per cent, respectively, and those whose fathers were born in Sweden 3.4 per cent, while no employees whose fathers were born in other specified countries show over 2 per cent of the total number for whom information was secured. Of the foreignborn employees, the Swedes show 16.9 per cent, the Germans 12 per cent, the Armenians 6.7 per cent, and the Poles 4.4 per cent, while no employees who are of other specified races show over 4 per cent of the total number of employees for whom information was secured. ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES. . The employees who are native-born of foreign father and those who are native whites born of native father show a higher percentage of females than of males, while of the foreign-born employees information was secured for a higher percentage of males than of females. Of the employees who are native-born of foreign father those of German parentage show 8.7 per cent, those of Irish parentage 7.1 per cent, and those of English parentage 3 per cent, while no employees whose fathers were born in other specified countries show over 2 per cent of the total number for whom information was secured. It will be noted that of the employees whose fathers were born in AustriaHungary, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, and Sweden information was secured for a larger percentage of females than of males. Of the foreign-born employees, the Germans show 8.3 per cent, the English 4.1 per cent, and the Irish 3.4 per cent, while none of the other foreign-born races show over 3 per cent of the total number for whom information was secured. The French-Canadians, Canadians (other than French), Russian Hebrews, Irish, Lithuanians, Norwegians, Poles, and Portuguese show a higher percentage of females for whom information was secured than males. ELECTRIC RAILWAYS. The table below sets forth the number and percentage of male employees of each race, for whom information was secured, employed on electric railways. Of 1,021 male employees for whom information was secured, 33.9 per cent are of foreign birth, 33.5 per cent are native-born of foreign father, and 32.6 per cent are native whites born of native father. Of the employees who are native-born of foreign father those whose fathers were born in Ireland show 22.9 per cent, followed by employees whose fathers were born in Germany with 4.3 per cent, while no employees whose fathers were born in other specified countries show over 2.7 per cent of the total number for whom information was secured. Of the employees of foreign birth, the South Italians show 9.1 per cent, the Irish 7.2 per cent and the North Italians 5.6 per cent, while none of the other races shown in the table exhibit over 2.8 per cent of the total number of employees from whom information was secured.
