Pyle to CAA) WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1957 UNITED STATES SENATE, COMMITTEE ON INTERSTATE AND FOREIGN COMMERCE, Washington, D. C. The committee met, pursuant to notice, at 10:26 a. m., in room G-16, Capitol Building, Senator Warren G. Magnuson (chairman) presiding. The CHAIRMAN. I am going to ask the Senator from Oklahoma: On the agenda were the two Interstate Commerce Commission members. I wonder if you would want to have them now, or Mr. Pyle? Senator MONRONEY. I think Mr. Pyle has a scheduled appearance before the House Interstate Committee. The CHAIRMAN. I forgot you are before the House. Come up, Mr. Pyle. I think the members of the committee might have a lot of questions to ask Mr. Pyle, not about himself in particular, but about certain recent events, disastrous events. I think what we will do the Senator from Ohio makes a good suggestion--because we have a long agenda today, we will discuss your confirmation, and then you go over to the House and give your testimony, and then if you get through, come back over here. Will that be all right? Mr. PYLE. Yes, Mr. Chairman. The CHAIRMAN. If the committee has any questions, then, about some of the matters that you know we have been discussing here, we can ask you then. Mr. PYLE. If it be the committee's desire, however, I think we can so arrange it that I stay on. The CHAIRMAN. We will be busy here for another hour anyway. Mr. Pyle, you have a biography which has been submitted here, I think. Mr. Pyle has been Acting Civil Aeronautics-CAA-Director now for how long? Mr. PYLE. Since September, since the death of Mr. Lowen. The CHAIRMAN. And Mr. Pyle is a veteran of 25 years in aviation. He has had some experience as an airline executive. What company was that? Mr. PYLE. With Pan American Airways initially, as an airline, and then I had my own company in Denver, Colo. The CHAIRMAN. That was a small feeder line? Mr. PYLE. That's right. The CHAIRMAN. What was that finally merged into? Mr. PYLE. We liquidated that company when we did not get the certificate for the operation. |
