Choice Receipts,

SELECTED FROM THE

BEST MANUSCRIPT AUTHORITIES,

"And there's the extract flasked and fine, and priced,
And salable at last."

"We may live without poetry, music, and art;

We may live without conscience, and live without heart;
We may live without friends, we may live without books;
But civilized man cannot live without cooks.-

He may live without books,-what is knowledge but grieving?
He may live without hope,-what is hope but deceiving?
He may live without love,-what is passion but pining?
But where is the man that can live without dining?"

Recipe for a Pleasant Dinner Party.

"A round table, holding eight,

A hearty welcome and little state;
One dish set on at a time,

As plain as you please, but always prime;
Beer for asking-and in pewter,

Servants who don't require a tutor;
Talking guests and dumb waiters,

Warm plates and hot potatoes."

PREFACE.

ALL of the following "choice receipts" have been thoroughly tested; and the most of them taken from old family manuscripts.

The first edition of this little book, issued in 1872, for the benefit of Christ Church Fair, sold so rapidly, that the demand far exceeded the supply; and in order to accommodate a large number of subscribers, it is deemed advisable to put forth a second and revised edition, containing a number of additional receipts-the proceeds of which have been donated by the compiler toward the erection of a Girl's School at Walla Walla, Washington Territory.
