Purpose: The yearbook provides a statistical record and analysis of major departmental program activities to supplement the annual report submitted to the Congress. Program progress is measured, and the projects' characteristics and effectiveness to recipients are assessed. Included also are data on the sources and availability of funds for mortgage lending and indexes on housing production costs. Input: Input is from the Assistant Secretaries for Housing, Community Planning and Development, Administration, and Policy Development and Research. In addition, data are obtained internally from the Government National Mortgage Association, the Federal Insurance Administration, the Federal Disaster Assistance Administration, and the Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, and from outside the Department, from the Census Bureau, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, FNMA, and the National Association of Realtors. Content: This document provides data on Department program and financial operations, and statistical information on housing and urban activities. The first ten sections present HUD program status and activity data compiled by the administering offices. Arrangement of programs is in accordance with the organization of the Department as of December 31, 1976. The eleventh section ("General Statistics") contains data published by other government departments and some private organizations. At the end of the Yearbook is an alphabetical index, arranged by subject.

Purpose: The document provides information on the distribution of funds appropriated in fiscal years 1975-1979 under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 by entitled units of Government. It reflects, too, how other funds (discretionary balances) are allocated geographically and is used to answer inquiries on such topics as entitlement amounts and relative rates of funding. Input: The grant amounts are determined by Data Systems and Statistics Divsions of CPD based on demographic data obtained from the Census Bureau, and previous program levels obtained from categorical program data bases. Content: The Directory describes the legal background for the Community Development Block Grant program, and details the formula used to determine objective needs in fund allocation. The report contains an entry for every unit of Government, showing the entitlement amounts for each, if applicable, over the first five years of the program. Also shown are the amounts of discretionary balance funds allocated to each SMSA and to the nonmetropolitan portions of each State. The document is updated annually with new entitlement data for the additional year.

Purpose: The Natural Resources Library is the lead library in the National Natural Resources Library and Information System, which is composed of over 400 libraries and information centers. Purpose: The Bird Banding Laboratory maintains banding records and supplies and provides reports on banding and band recovery of nearly 1,000 species of birds. Information covers the North American continent. The Canadian Wildlife Service participates with the Fish and Wildlife Service in this activity and uses the Bird Banding Laboratory facility. The intended audience includes ornithological researchers, bird management specialists, and other interested parties, both internal and external to the Service. Input: The primary providers of data are individuals or entities (governmental or private) who band birds (under permit procedures) and individuals who recover the used bands. The data received at the laboratory are processed by specialist staff, coded onto paper forms, and then keyed onto magnetic tape. Content: The principal subject matter coverage pertains to banding activity and quantity of bands recovered. This in turn relates to the migratory bird populations of the North American continent. Output: The laboratory relies on a number of interrelated computer subsystems that create, maintain, and retrieve information related to banding and recovery. The products of the computer system include reports to the bander and to the individual who reports a recovery and monthly reports to agencies and individuals involved in banding. The form, medium, and frequency of output vary in accordance with the purpose and nature of any given report or other output.

Purpose: The purpose of this survey, conducted every 5 years, is to collect, analyze, and publish data on the numbers of sportsmen, days of activity, expenditures, attitudes, and economic values of fishing and hunting activities. Content: Data for this study are reported by State and nationwide. The socioeconomic profile of American sportsmen is used by State and Federal agencies in the planning of fish and wildlife programs and in guiding policy decisions. When combined with other data bases, the survey produces data on trends and indices for the public demand for hunting and fishing in the United States.
