Program: Intelligence and Communication, Defense Mapping Agency

Congressional Recipient: House Committee on Armed Services; House Committee on Appropriations: Defense Subcommittee; Senate Committee on Armed Services; Senate Committee on Appropriations: Defense Subcommittee.

Authority: Annual Department of Defense Appropriation Authorization Act.

Availability: The gazetteers are circulated free of charge to Federal agencies and qualified users. Information regarding names is available to Federal agencies and the public on request.

Purpose: This system provides staff support to BGN foreignnames programs in response to provisions of Public Law 80-242 (which created BGN) and provides information about foreign geographic nomenclature to DOD, other Federal, and non-Federal users. Input: Primary sources of information comprise maps, gazetteers, atlases, census documents, and other publications issued by foreign agencies. As processed by DMA staff under BGN guide

lines, these sources become the basic files of nonmenclatural information. An important part of processing is conversion to roman alphabet of names from non-roman-alphabet sources. Content: Data are concerned with nomenclature of geographic features in foreign areas (including undersea features, features in Antarctica, and features on planetary surfaces). Items include name of feature, class or type of feature, location (latitude and longitude), and administrative area in which located. Listed are approximately 5 million names, including a BGN-approved name for features as well as variant spellings as required. While some information is old, most names in files are kept relatively current. Output: Names are disseminated in a series of gazetteers covering about 155 countries or areas. The gazetteers are in hardcopy, but magnetic tapes for each also are available. The tapes, however, lack diacritics that are necessary for many names converted from non-roman-alphabet sources. Some gazetteers are old and do not show current names.
