The system is the primary tool for employees researching customers' inquiries, orders, and complaints. The file is updated daily. Output: The basic product of the system is CPT display of queried publications. The Publications Reference File is available in microfiche form for sale on a bimonthly subscription basis with monthly updates. All designated depository libraries receive the subscription and updates.

Purpose: This system is composed of several subsystems which reflect various missions of the Library of Congress, serve a variety of users, and provide several specific services. Input: Bibliographic information is prepared and entered by the MARC editorial staff. Most of the data for the congressional files are prepared by the Congressional Research Service. Content: The major subsystems included in LOCIS are files formerly known as Subject-Content-Oriented Retriever for Processing Information Online (SCORPIO), Multiple Use MARC System (MUMS), and the Library Order System (LOIS). In addition, the system includes the Legislative Information Files which monitor legislative action on bills; the Congressional Record Files which contain abstracts of pages of the Congressional Record; the Major Issues File which is a collection of topical briefs on public policy issues; and the Bibliographic Citation File which contains references to topical periodical articles, GPO publications, United Nations documents, and other publications. A variety of bibliographic files which provide access to currently available books published in English since 1968 and other Roman langugages since 1973 are also included. The National Referral Center Master File provides information on organizational sources of technical and scientific information. Output: Hardcopy products of LOCIS include the Digest of General Public Bills and Resolutions, SDI service for Congressional users, catalog cards, and proofsheets of new cataloging. Magnetic tapes are also available for sale.

Purpose: This system facilitates the planning, implementation, and coordination of all Personnel and administrative management for the Library of Congress (LC), as well as financial management for the LC, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), and the Copyright Royalty Tribunal (CRT). Input: Data used in this system are derived from purchase orders, time and attendance sheets, position postings, and other administrative working documents. Content: The financial management component of the system performs the functions of disbursement, planning, and monitoring of available funds. This subsystem includes payroll files for processing biweekly pay and leave records and for maintaining a history of all pay and leave information for tax and reporting purposes. It also includes ledger files used to maintain pertinent information on each financial transaction. The personnel management subsystem consists of several activities, such as monitoring current position postings and personnel training, designed to assist the personnel and labor relations staff. The administrative management component controls and produces timely reports on all computer-related hardware acquired by the Library. Output: This system produces a variety of hard copy reports which are available to the appropriate LC, CBO, and CPT staffs and to other Government agencies as required by law. Among the products are U.S. Treasury reports, allotment ledgers, status of funds reports, weekly procurement and supply transactions, payslips, time and attendance reports, and position control reports. Information available on-line to appropriate LC staff includes hardware inventory control data, allotment ledger reports, and personnel and posting applicant data.

Purpose: This system contains three subsystems designed to facilitate the work of the Copyright Office in the major areas of production of the Catalog of Copyright Entries, registration of copyright requests, and licensing of jukeboxes. Input: Data used in this system are extracted from copyright registration forms and copies of the actual work, correspondence, jukebox licensing applications. Content: The Copyright Office Publication and Interactive Cataloging System (COPICS) allows for the on-line copyright cataloging of books, sound recordings, motion pictures, filmstrips, documents, and serials. The data contained in COPICS are used to publish the Catalog of Copyright Entries. The Copyright Office In-Process System (COINS) contains information needed to manage deposit accounts for the payment of copyright registration fees and to track all pending registration cases requiring correspondence. The Jukebox Licensing System is designed to record, report, and generate certificates of license for coin-operated phonorecord players (jukeboxes) within the 20 days required by law. Output: The system produces a variety of working documents for the Copyright Office staff, license certificates and renewal reminders for license registrants, and copyright catalog cards and the Catalog of Copyright Entries, both of which are available to the public.

Purpose: This system is responsible for administering a national program to provide reading material in nonbook media, such as braille and talking books, to qualified citizens. Input: Data for this system is drawn from cataloging worksheets and copies of actual books. Content: The materials are selected, procured, and distributed through cooperating local and regional centers. This system contains cataloging for books that have been converted to other media since 1974 and data on books being considered for conversion to other media. Among the specific data maintained for each item are order information, copy allotment to the local and/or regional centers, and copyright details. Output: The system generates “Reading Materials for the Blind and Physically Handicapped," which is distributed to the local and regional centers, and a “Union List of Titles In-Process," which is for internal use.

Information regarding interest rate forecasts is provided by the treasurer's division. Content: The principal subject matter is corporate financial statements. Major information is status of corporate assets, liabilities, and capital accounts, as well as income and expenses generated relative to corporate operations for a 28month period. The update cycle is semiannual. Output: The system produces an SLMA balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement on a monthly basis in hardcopy form.

Purpose: This system provides a data base for producing descriptive statistics on legal services field programs funded by the Legal Services Corporation (LCS) for use in program planning. Input: The data contained in this system are extracted from funding applications and from financial reports maintained by LSC. Content: The system includes a grant data file, a workforce analysis file, and an annual program budget file. The grant data file contains current and historical funding data and service population characteristics of the local legal services programs. The workforce analysis file contains employment-related characteristics of staff by office, including job category, years of experience, annual salary, sex, ethnic background, handicap status, and use of a second language in present work. The annual program budget file details legal services program allocations of LSC and non-LSC funds among standard budget categories and identifies the sources and amounts of non-LCS funds.
