ernment sectors through Interactive Sciences
Geographic Relevance: International; National

Purpose: The NIH-EPA Chemical Information System (CIS) provides the international scientific community with on-line access to a series of numeric and bibliographic data bases generated by chemical-related organizations throughout the world. Input: CIS acquires machine-readable files from numerous domestic and foreign government and private sources. Content: CIS now offers access to several dozen files, including those prepared by the Mass Spectrometry Data Centre and the Cambridge Cystallographic Data Centre, and is continually adding new data bases to the system. The system currently contains about 500,000 entries for compounds. The system includes a battery of interactive computer programs for searching, retrieving, and analyzing data. It also features connection tables permitting substructure searching, as well as the inclusion of the Chemical Abstract System (CAS) registry numbers for compounds in the data bases. CIS files are being used by the Environmental Protection Agency to assemble a candidate list for the toxic substances inventory required under the Toxic Substances Control Act. Output: Reports are generated upon user request. Services are available on a fee or subscription basis, without restriction.
