world fire literature. Content: The journal is arranged in two sections: abstracts and indexes. The abstracts section contains the complete bibliographic description required for retrieval of each item, along with a description of the contents of the item, usually consisting of the author's abstract, summary, or conclusions. The patents entries contain, in addition, citations of the patent classes, in most cases in accordance with the international classification system, as well as filing and disclosure dates, priorities, and, if available, assignees and diagrams. The index section consists of four indexes: author, subject, source, and report number. Each entry in each index is keyed to an abstract number. Annual cumulative indexes are published. The subject index entries consist of up to three hierarchic descriptive levels to clearly identify the subject content. The source index displays source document names and organization names under the headings: books, codes, conferences, congresses, dissertations, journals, meetings, patents, reports, seminars, standards, and symposia.

Purpose: This monthly report is the official medium for presenting the work of the Bureau, whose functions are to prepare the economic accounts of the United States and to interpret economic developments in the light of these accounts and other pertinent information. The measures and analyses produced by BEA are used in the formulation and execution of fiscal, financial, international, wage-price, and other policies. This information is essential for economic decisionmaking by business, State and local governments, labor, and other economic groups and individuals. Input: Inputs to the current business statistics and analyses published within the "Survey" come from the information systems of the Bureau. These systems receive inputs from numerous sources, including other Federal agencies and private and public organizations outside the Federal Government. Content: The "Survey of Current Business" is the official source of data on the economic accounts. Analyses of current business conditions and the near-term outlook are published in "The Business Situation" section of the "Survey." These analyses are prepared within the framework of the economic accounts. A review and interpretation of the preliminary GNP estimates and also a preview of them, based on data available 1 month earlier, are published quarterly. In addition, analyses of one or more specific aspects of the business situation are published. Statistics and explanatory notes are published in the "S-pages" of the "Survey." These carry approximately 2,500 separate series. Used in conjunction with the biennial "Business Statistics" supplements to the "Survey," they provide continuous and consistent series running back many years and cover all major aspects of the economy.

Purpose: The "Business Conditions Digest" (BCD) is the monthly Bureau of Economic Analysis publication which disseminates short-term economic time series at the national level. Input: Inputs to the economic time series published in BCD are obtained from a variety of public and private sources including the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Department of Labor, the Bureau of the Census, Dun and Bradstreet, and the Department of Defense. Content: The “Business Conditions Digest” is a monthly compendium of economic indicators which presents approximately 300 monthly and quarterly seasonally adjusted economic time series, about 150 of which have been classified as cyclical indicators, i.e., they conform well to broad fluctuations in aggregate economic activity. The remaining series are useful in the interpretation of the economic situation and outlook, although they do not qualify as cyclical indicators. The series are shown in graphic and tabular form for the period 1953 to the present. Diffusion indexes, various analytical measures, and summary characteristics of individual series are also shown. The cyclical indicators-classified as leading, roughly coincident, or lagging-and the composite indexes derived from them, have been generally recognized as useful tools for economic forecasting. "Long Term Economic Growth," a report designed to complement the business cycle publications, presents approximately 1,200 annual economic time series needed in the analysis of long-term economic trends. The most recent report, covering the period 1860-1970, was published in June 1973.
