Purpose: This document is published to provide information to various sectors of trade, to other Government agencies, and to foreign governments on the placement of Tariff Schedules of the United States Annotated (TSUSA) items in the textile category system. This system is published annually, with revisions as required, in the Federal Register and the publication of the Correlation is designed to make information on the system more accessible. Input: The Committee for Implementation of the Textile Agreements is responsible for the revision of the textile category system used to negotiate and implement foreign textile agreements. It reviews and approves changes in the system which are necessitated by changes in agreement coverage or in the TSUSA. Content: This document lists each of the 107 textile categories and places the appropriate TSUSA numbers in each category. It provides a brief description of each TSUSA item, the conversion factor used to convert from the unit of measure to square yards equivalent and the unit of measure for each category. Section 5 of the Correlation provides a cross reference with each TSUSA number being assigned to a textile category.

Purpose: This survey of the U.S. Merchant Marine is required by law. The report determines the additions and replacements required to carry forward the National policy declared in Sec. 210 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1936. Input: This report describes a new development in the preparation of long-term trade forecasts that have been produced by this agency to assist the Federal Government, and the maritime and related industries, in their long-term policy and planning efforts. Input was researched by Maritime Administration employees and was received from many outside sources. Content: The document consists of three volumes. The first, a summary, describes the purpose of Trade Forecasting and the procedure for Micro-Model Forecasting, evaluates Forecasts accuracy and limitations, presents statistics on the waterborne share of total trade, and gives Maritime Administration's publication schedule and a list of Micro-Model imports. The second volume is a compilation of 3-digit world, region, and coastal route forecasts; each page contains a code, a description, history, and forecast for the commodity under consideration. Volume 3 makes use of the same format but concentrates on a forecast of trade routes.

Purpose: This report shows a breakdown of merchant fleets of the world. Information is given on the number of vessels, gross tons, and deadweight tons for four vessel designations. Data are restricted to oceangoing vessels of 1,000 or more gross tons; ships operating on the Great Lakes and inland waterways and special categories, such as channel ships, ice breakers, and cable ships, are excluded. Input: Data used to prepare this report were collected by the Maritime Administration from public sources and U.S. Government records. Content: This report summarizes the status of the world's merchant fleets as of December 31, 1976; it gives tabular information showing the number of vessels and gross and deadweight tonnages for four all-inclusive vessel-type designations. The freighter fleet is then further broken down into five subgroups, and comparative deadweight rankings of each national flag in 1976, 1975, and 1966 are given for each type of vessel. An extended analysis of the U.S. merchant fleet and the fleets of the 12 largest maritime nations is included, and there is a summary of changes occurring in major maritime fleets.

These centers form, in aggregate, the National Standard Reference Data System. Content: This data center collects, compiles, indexes, evaluates, and disseminates data on the properties and interactions of elementary particles, and publishes the annual "Review of Particle Properties," a summary of the properties of elementary particles. It also produces compilation reports of cross-sections as other measured quantities for particle interactions. This continuing project, supported jointly by the Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, and National Bureau of Standards, collects, analyzes, and evaluates all new data produced in high-energy physics experiments throughout the world to obtain the best values of properties of the elementary particles. The project objective is the publication of standard reference data monographs on diffusion in metals and their alloys. Papers from the technical literature are systematically collected and classified according to the alloy systems on which they report diffusion data. More than 4,000 papers are examined each year, of which about 2,000 are entered into the files of the Center. Monographs for alloy systems important in technology are being produced, starting with diffusion in copper and copper alloys.

Newly established systematic trends and oscillator strength distributions are also used to determine additional data by interpolation.

In addition, it provides guidance to research planners and managers through identification of areas in need of better data. Input: The primary source of data is the published scientific literature. Pertinent data are retrieved from the world literature, evaluated as to accuracy, and assembled into tabulations of recommended values which are published and otherwise disseminated. The work is done in a complex of data evaluation centers supported and coordinated by the Office of Standard Reference Data at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). These centers form, in aggregate, the National Standard Reference Data System. Content: Data are collected from over 300 journals on such materials as minerals, intermetallic compounds, environmental contaminants, and other inorganic substances. Critical evaluation is provided by close scrutiny by the professional staff of the Center, employing specially developed computer programs which permit correlation of sets of data. Evaluated data are placed in the NBS Basic Crystal Data File (48,000 entries, 6000 new/year). The file is used to prepare crystal data tables, space group tables, and crystallochemical identification tables. The Center also provides input to the NIH-EPA Chemical Information System.
