Purpose: The MMP serves as the annual DOE nuclear materials planning document for the production distribution and utilization of these materials for the ensuing 12-year planning period. It contains significant materials management issues requiring top DOE management attention, e.g., the Budget Review Committee (BRC) and the Secretary and identifies risks and options which could affect planned materials management actions. This document is provided to the OMB to be used as a background information for reviewing the DOE budget. Input: The basic input to the MMP is the nine field offices individual MMP's. Basic parts include: (1) materials management program (2) material usage schedule, (3) risk/contingency plans for meeting inventory targets, (4) options to reduce budget expenditures through materials management action, (5) options and risks involved in affecting target inventories, and (6) analytical studies. The nuclear materials include: (1) enriched uranium, (2) weapon grade plutonium, (3) fuel grade plutonium, (4) power grade plutonium, (5) tritium, (6) plutonium-238, (7) uranium-233, and (8) heavy water. Section II title "Weapons Production Planning" is prepared by the Military Applications Division. The “Enriched Uranium Analysis" is prepared by the Uranium Resources and Enrichment Division. Content: The MMP shows the DOE supply/demand situation for the eight nuclear materials (as shown under input) for the 12-year planning period. Significant materials management issues are identified for top DOE management attention. The MMP is prepared annually and it is published in September of each year. It is consistent with the DOE budget submission to OMB.

Purpose: The National Solar Heating and Cooling Information Center was established by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in cooperation with the Department of Energy (DOE), as part of a Federal program to foster American energy sufficiency. Input: Information and data (e.g., reports, studies, proposals, grants) from HUD and DOE laboratories and contractors, universities, consultants, organizations, and private citizens are sources of input. The Center has a computer tie-in with the DOE Energy Data Base, which is maintained by the DOE Technical Information Center. Purpose: BCTIC provides a national computing technology resource to clinical medical practice and to biomedical research and development. The purposes are continuing assessment of the stateof-the-art, fostering of exchange of computing technology, avoiding of duplication of efforts, promoting effective cost savings and advancement of the state-of-the-art. Input: BCTIC serves its sponsors' programs by providing technology transfer and services, thereby improving the exchange of information among research and medical groups. It provides the means for collaboration among members of the user community; focuses attention on outstanding problems of mutual concern; advances the technology through the "open code/data concept"; and provides training in the implementation of the specialized software and hardware interface designs. Content: Early emphasis is on computer applications in nuclear medicine, and all technology will be considered in the information analysis center. Long-range goals include an extension to biomedical research on a wider scale and an in-depth consideration of biomedical data. Output: The principal output is the publication and maintenance of a directory of nuclear medicine research centers, hospitals, laboratories, and clinics that use computers and a handbook of the computing technology utilized by each; and a periodic newsletter which covers current activities, literature accession lists, and news of current work and problems in the user community. Purpose: The Energy Research, Development, and Demonstration Inventory was established in 1971 and is sponsored by the Department of Energy. The Inventory is a computerized file containing descriptions of current energy-related research done or sponsored in the United States. The scope of interest is broad and includes: all energy sources-fossil fuels, nuclear, and unconventional; electric power generation, transmission, distribution, and storage; energy uses and conservation-heating and cooling, lighting, appliances, industrial processes, transportation, agriculture; economic and legal aspects; and environmental and health effects. In relation to these subjects, information on exploration, mining, processing, resources and reserve studies, and basic or applied research and engineering development is of interest. Input: The input is from books, monographs, reports, journals, and data in the subject area. Content: The descriptions of energy research projects are arranged by subject categories and consist of (when available) title, research institution and city, sponsor, principal investigator(s), project duration, funding level, description of research, number of technical personnel assigned to the project, type of research (basic, applied, and/or developmental), and publications. Keywords and secondary subject categories, when needed, are also added to the project descriptions. Various statistical summary tables on funding are included in the published version of the Inventory. Statistical studies of the measurement of coverage and the representativeness of the Inventory projects are conducted and summarized in the published Inventory. Output: The system prepares inventories of descriptions of energy-related research and development progress. Purpose: Sponsored by the Department of Energy Division of Biomedical and Environmental Research, the Battelle-Columbus Laboratories Environmental Information and Analysis Center provides a regionally oriented data system utilizing the resources of the EIAC. Input: The input is monographs, reports, journals, books, and data in the subject area. Content: Originally, the EIAC played an important role in support of the field data collection requirements for the bioenvironmental and radiological safety feasibility study for a nuclear excavated sea level canal and for support of the AEC Division of Military Applications supplementary test site bioenvironmental study on Amchitka. The cycling and transport of radionuclides in complex ecosystems has received major emphasis, with special consideration given to tritium, plutonium, and nuclear powerplant siting. The operational scope has continued to expand in support of the Department of Energy program for the development of a new, more comprehensive thesaurus of terms required to identify the broad environmental and technological considerations relevant to this task. Output: Currently, EIAC is updating the bibliography on the bioenvironmental effects associated with nuclear powerplants to identify the more recent literature collected and used as background information in the preparation of general environmental siting guides for nuclear powerplants-topics and bases. Geographic Relevance: National

Purpose: The facility provides referral services and responds to needs throughout the Department of Energy. It offers in-depth literature services, using computerized data bases, and answers environmental questions posed by the scientific community, government agencies, and industry. Input: The facility develops specialized data bases and document collections. Content: Capabilities range broadly across the environmental damage and control spectrum from energy technologies to hazardous substances. Output: Many products and services are available through ERC. These include information overview monographs, abstract journals, newsletters, topical reviews, annotated bibliographies, management information systems, tabular data extraction, data base creation, directory and distribution services, and maintenance of environmental data resource file in hardcopy, microfiche, and magnetic tape form. The ERC also provides response and referral services including in-depth literature services, using computerized data bases and extensive library facilities; answering of specific environmental questions posed by the scientific community, Government agencies, industry, and others; the publication of bibliographies as natural byproducts of the response service; and technical survey activities.

Purpose: The Information Center for Internal Exposure is sponsored by the Department of Energy, Division of Biomedical and Environmental Research. Original work of the Center started in 1948; it was formally established in 1965. Input: The sources are books, monographs, journals, reports, and data in the subject area. Content: The Center is concerned with the estimation of dosage received from internally deposited radionuclides; calculation of maximum permissable concentrations of radionuclides in air, water, and food; body-burden calculations; and analysis of information relevant to metabolic questions involved in estimating internal exposure. Purpose: Established in 1972, the Toxic Materials Information Center serves as the major information facility for the NSF-RANN Environmental Aspects of Trace Contaminants Program and its grantees. TMIC performs multiple information functions for this program and acts as a focal point for exchange of information between researchers and users of the data obtained by the researchers. Input: Books, monographs, journals, reports, and data collected from experimenters in the subject field are the sources of input. Content: The content of TMIC centers on environmental levels of toxic materials and their consequences. Since this is a RANN (Research Applied to National Needs) program, national priorities have determined the priority ordering of the materials emphasized. For the first four years the toxic metals were the first priority, but the emphasis is shifting to synthetic and natural organic compounds (primarily non-energy-related industrial chemicals). TMIC is a component center of the Environmental Resource Center, Information Center Complex, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It shows the extensive environmental data bases and in-house literature collections housed at ORNL and maintains several specialized collections on trace contaminants and environmental transports. Output: The Center prepares comprehensive information overviews on the environmental, health, and control aspects of selected trace contaminants to provide in a readily accessible form to members of the scientific community such as administrators, decision-makers, and researchers information needed to assess the effect of such pollutants on the environment and on humans. It answers specific inquiries regarding environmental levels of pollutants and maintains an up-to-date listing of criteria and standards available in this area; provides references to documents and to current research and development projects; conducts literature searches; and publishes data compilations and bibliographies.
