Purpose: "Trends" responds to the requirements of Government analysts and researchers for timely analysis of communist media output in the perspective of past content and behavior; new elements or departures from a standard line are identified. Input: Input is obtained from FBIS' monitoring and analysis of the foreign media. Content: "Trends" articles describe and interpret Moscow, Peking and other communist media treatment of major issues bearing on policy. They cover such topics as Soviet-U.S., Sino-U.S. and SinoSoviet relations on nuclear issues and arms limitation, the Middle East, Indochina, East European developments, international communist alignments, as well as Soviet, Chinese and other communist regimes' domestic affairs. "Trends" also includes supplementary articles providing more background and depth, as well as information on volume and beaming of radio propaganda on selected topics. Declassified "Trends" is published weekly in paper and microfiche versions.

Purpose: This publication is prepared for the use of U.S. Government officials. The daily report provides its users with a continuing awareness of foreign media reporting on internal affairs and international developments in worldwide political, military, and socioeconomic spheres. Input: Input is obtained from monitoring the foreign media. Items from foreign broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, and periodicals are processed from the first or best available source. Content: The daily report is separated into eight volumes, each devoted to a particular geographic area: Peoples' Republic of China, Eastern Europe, Soviet Union, Asia and Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, Western Europe, and Subsaharan Africa. Each English-language volume contains current news and commentaries on internal affairs and international developments in the political, military, and socioeconomic spheres. Daily report volumes are published Monday through Friday in both paper and microfiche versions.

Purpose: JPRS responds to the requirements of government analysts and researchers by providing accurate, timely translations and abstracts from foreign media on a worldwide basis covering trends in political, military, economic, scientific, and technical spheres. Input: JPRS publications contain information primarily from foreign newspapers, periodicals, and books, but also from news agency transmissions and broadcasts. Materials from foreign-language sources are translated; those from English-language sources are transcribed or reprinted, with the original phrasing and other characteristics retained. Content: JPRS publications are primarily concerned with publications in Communist countries, though materials from all countries may be included. About half of the reports are in the scientific and technical fields; the remainder cover the political, military, and socioeconomic spheres. Translations are consolidated and published in both serialized geographic area and subject-oriented publications, and on an ad hoc basis.

Research and Reference Aids.

Geographic Relevance: International

Purpose: Publications are issued to support the intelligence needs of U.S. Government officials; they provide basic background and current information about foreign countries on topics of interest to these officials. Input: The information is collected primarily from foreign newspapers, books, magazines, journals, and official publications of foreign governments. Content: The publications in these aids cover a wide range of subjects, with economic and biographic information predominating. The biographic reference aids are directories and listings of foreign officials, especially those of Communist and Communist Bloc countries. (These aids include "Chiefs of State and Cabinet members of Foreign Countries, appearances of Chinese and Soviet officials, and some wall charts showing the names and positions of foreign government officials.) For the most part, the economic reports deal with the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China; however, the "Economic Indicators Weekly Review" is concerned with the major non-Communist developed countries. The "National Basic Intelligence Factbook" is issued semiannually and includes information on all countries of the world. Other reports are issued irregularly on specific political, military or geographical topics. Directories, statistical compilations, Atlasses, and fact books are also produced.
